Air mail would set you back a whole 8¢ in 1966.

But maybe Lucy got a dollar, too – then they would still have 92¢ left between them.

For a kid, in the 60s, a lot. There were many small but perfectly fun toys available for one dollar. Candy was cheap. I got a plastic, fullsized traditional kite for a dollar, and the man threw in a ball of string.
My mother used to put “a dollar’s worth of regular” in her old Plymouth and it was like a quarter of a tank.
    That was before inflation.

Lucy thinks she’s off the hook now…Linus knows that chipping in her “thank you message” in his letter gets her off his case…and makes her look lazy and cheap.

Too bad now that it’s the end of 2013, like many supposed 1st-World Country like (Singapore) mine, you can’t even fill a shopping basket of groceries for $50, use to be you can fill an entire shopping-cart/trolley and still have plenty of change left to nearly fill another shopping-cart/trolley…

Even more sadly, no one’s salary is keeping up with inflation.

Man, I remember getting a whole dollar as a kid and thinking I was nearly rich!

For $1, I could by a balsa wood model airplane ($.29), more candy than I could possibly eat in one sitting, and an ice cream float. Back then, a dollar made you King (or Queen) for a day!

In 1966, I could’ve bought two matchbox cars. I loved matchbox cars back then and I had quite a collection.

The first square originally had “DECEMBER 25” in the original 1966 running of this strip.

And since this is the last 1966 strip, tomorrow we might see the start of 1967 Peanuts strips unless we go back or way back or further or way further.

And regarding this strip: 1) Linus was happy to get $1 – Today it would by $5 or $10! 2) An air mail stamp? Postage stamps (Forever mostly) will be 49 cents instead of 46 cents starting in late January 2014.

Back in the mid-70s, an airmail stamp to Japan or Korea for a normal sized letter envelope was 33 cents. And my mom thought that was exorbitant. I had penpals—the only reason I was allowed was that there was usually a month-long lag between letters.
