A rather clever literary allusion today:

From Four Saints in Three Acts, by Gertrude Stein

    Pigeons on the grass alas.
    Pigeons on the grass alas.
Short longer grass short longer longer shorter yellow grass. Pigeons
large pigeons on the shorter longer yellow grass alas pigeons on the
    grass.
If they were not pigeons what were they.
If they were not pigeons on the grass alas what were they. He had
heard of a third and he asked about it it was a magpie in the sky.
If a magpie in the sky on the sky can not cry if the pigeon on the
grass alas can alas and to pass the pigeon on the grass alas and the
magpie in the sky on the sky and to try and to try alas on the
grass alas the pigeon on the grass the pigeon on the grass and alas.
They might be very well they might be very well very well they might
    be.
Let Lucy Lily Lily Lucy Lucy let Lucy Lucy Lily Lily Lily Lily
Lily let Lily Lucy Lucy let Lily. Let Lucy Lily.

Snoopy usually isn’t insulted by being referred to as a beagle. In fact, he is usually proud.

Ain’t no, is a double negative which means Snoopy IS saying he IS a stupid beagle, However it’s the stupid part he is objecting to.

The discussion comments here is almost as bad as Charlie Brown’s meetings on the mound.

Lucy claims he’s just a stupid beagle.

If Snoopy was drawn to be a true beagle, he’d be tricolored (no brown, no beagle.)

This reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes… although this came first.

Bring him water in a glass.
He’ll look at you and wonder why.
    Then think, well, I’ll try
Because I really am a Beagle
And Beagles don’t like to run dry.

    And I’m no poet,
but I thought I’d have a a go at it.

    I thought it was:
    Pigeons on the grass, alas.
    Beagle on the roof, aloof!

He’s a beagle. Just not a stupid one. I see what you mean though. He was established as a beagle in 1966, so I don’t know why they’d go six years back. I have noticed they’ve done that a few times in the past. They’d show strips for a certain year. Then go a few years back and go back ahead. I don’t know what’s up with that.

    @Andrew Haas

I haven’t really thought of it that way. I know they violate a few rules of Great Danes when they draw Scooby-Doo, maybe they violate the rules of beagles when they draw Snoopy. But in Scooby’s case it’s to avoid comparisons with Marmaduke. I don’t know if there were any popular beagles before Snoopy.
