   When they started re-printing and colorizing these old strips, they must have known that these birds would gradually evolve into Woodstock and his breed. Why colour them blue? It will be strange when they suddenly turn yellow.

   Three responses: (1) I believe in the original Sunday strips, they WERE blue. (2) Just as there are different colored birds in my area, different colored birds are not out of the ordinary. (3) At this point, Schulz had not made any bird a regular character. He was exploring options but had not finalized his bird character. Woodstock first appeared in 1967, the year after this particular strip.

    Hmmm, Wizer of the Alley Oop comic has a bird hat, and he’s in big trouble just now, so his bird hat didn’t do him any good.
    .
    Besides, it’s cruel to take feathers from birds to make hats. (If the birds drop them, that’s another thing!)
