I always hated those. Some kids got to show off about their long trips or their summer at some exclusive riding camp or whatever. Me? “I worked in the vegetable garden, cleaned house, and read books.” Someone would always ask, “didn’t you do anything?”

Tell her, Linus….that has been the only thing they can think of for decades….I think their brains are still on vacation and just want to ooze into the real stuff….And as others said, I did not go on a yahoo vacation..just played with friends, got wet in the sprinklers and stayed up late with my Dad watching TV…

Well, he is in like the third or fourth grade. My teachers would probably have made it a two paragraph assignment, and in class instead of homework. And technically the teachers really don’t care what you did over the summer, unless their nosy PITAs who really don’t read what you do that closely. Their just looking at grammar, spelling, and back then handwriting.

A good teacher might actually want to know what each kid did during the break, especially if it’s a new class for them. Could be quite useful to assess who is having problems or whether they are highly imaginative. Or if they’ve entirely forgotten how to string a sentence together.

My summer after 3rd & 7th grade were spent in the hospital
for 8 weeks after I had surgery on both legs. My muscles had
atrophied & got so tight I could not straighten my legs enough
to lock my braces! I also got new braces after 8th grade!

Like Orinoco Womble above, it was embarrassing to me to have to write that I read books or visited my grandmother, while other kids went to Europe or Florida or Carlsbad Caverns. I bugged my parents for years to take us on a real vacation. We finally went to Washington DC, but by that time, I was a pre-teen and no longer forced to write “What I did on my Summer Vacation”. (But still young enough to ONLY be interested in the hotel pool). LOL

Isn’t it interesting that most of us can state what we did on our summer vacation in two sentences or less and yet we had to write two pages? It was hard for me to extend working on a farm and running in the woods to two paragraphs let alone two pages. Maybe that is how the teachers try to develop creative writing in their students but clever lies developed instead?

Solving the mystery of Snoopy and Lila was a pretty good accomplishment.

First you must teach them the meaning of the word “theme”.
