Yeah, most of us support ourselves. I just don’t happen to agree that this should make us an object of pity….

Hard being an atheist in an uncaring world were random events can destroy a life you’ve spent decades building.

    I am accident on accident
    And chance on random chance
    I’m the product of environment
    And changing circumstance

    The odds of my occurrence
    Are incalculably small –
If you round off to the -m- -b- trillionth place
    I don’t exist at all!

    Every atom in my body
    From an ancient star’s collapse;
I’m a long time in my making –
    Several billion years, perhaps!

    In a corner of infinity,
    A cold and hostile place
    On a tiny blue oasis
    Set adrift in empty space

I’m a subset of the universe
That’s learned to look around –
And which cannot help but wonder
At the marvels I have found!

    The descendent of bacteria,
    Of annelids, of fish,
I’m a member of the primates,
Just an ape-man, if you wish

    Through the engine of selection
Some would live and some would die –
    “From so simple a beginning”
    Just how fortunate am I!

And I pass along my molecules
And take my place in line
So some distant, future life form
Will have carbon that was mine

And perhaps my DNA as well –
    Unlikely, though, my friend –
I have ridden quite a lucky streak,
    And lucky streaks must end.

So it is, and so it must be
When so much depends on chance
    But…
Since the music plays so briefly,
Can you blame me if I dance?

Atheists are held up like everyone else. By each other and our own work.

In the ancient Roman Empire, Atheists were the poorest of the poor. How do we know this? Everybody in the Empire had to pay for their gods. This is where the Jews got in trouble, as they didn’t want to pay for gods that didn’t really exist. Atheists, having nothing, including enough sense to come out of the rain, were exempted. The name is from the ancient Greek, which means, unable to afford having gods. So what did the Romans do? What Romans were so good at. Turned all of them into full time slaves. When you think about it, Atheists really got off easy with the Romans. They could have been Druids who performed weekly human sacrifices to their gods. Romans believed anybody can worship any gods, as long as the gods tax is paid one way or another and human sacrifice is not involved in paying this tax. That is what crops and livestock were for. Druids got wiped out by the Romans for not only not paying the tax properly, but doing human sacrifice, which was on the top ten list of things not to do in front of Romans unless you want to start a war and get your tribe wiped off the map.
