Liberal absolution…”It was McNamara’s fault.”

Or Dick Cheney?

FearDog, McNamara will have to face by himself whatever his sins are. He did what he did, and everyone else who got us into Vietnam (liberal and conservative) will have to face their own judgment. Absolution? That’s up to God alone.

Very poor taste Oliphant - the man’s dead. I hope someone shows you the same respect when you go.

Pat should have shown his McNamara’s presidential bosses waiting for him - since they make the final decisions.
Typical one-dimensional thinking – you use to be better than this, Pat

Houston – Pat didn’t bomb other countries into smithereens. Kissinger should have already swung from a rope by now. Fairly inexcusable that he’s in the halls of power still. McNamara contributed quite heavily to that mess, he will not be missed by humanity as he is not being remembered well by history.

Did you like Vietnam, NoFearPup? Did you really like it?

Perfect cartoon. To McNamara’s credit, he did come up with 11 rules of war based on his reflections on Vietnam. I think we are probably ignoring most, if not all, of them.
Nearly 60,000 dead Americans and countless wounded plus who knows how many dead Vietnamese is a heavy toll for no tangible or even intangible result. His accounting charts describing our successes must be priceless.

BUT, why the assumption?…Why Jackson at the pearly gates?
McN was a libocrat after all. Does that not get him to heaven?
dtroutma said, 4 months ago
The Vietnamese toll was over 1 million. Johnson ran the war 8/65-68, Nixon/Kissinger 1/69-4/75 you figure who kept it going longer. “Domino theory”, unfortunately and fraudulently, was supported by both parties at the time. By the time I got there in ‘66 we knew it was a mistake, which “Big Bob” admitted only years later. When will the retractions and apologies come out for Iraq?
emcov said, 4 months ago
C’mon, NoFearPup, it’s not a “liberal” thing. Robert McNamara has admitted he was the architect of this huge mistake.
Now, if we can get the neocons to do the same regarding Iraq, maybe we can move ahead an inch or two on the road to true civilization…

Rik O,shay - Wasn’t there…Have anything more intelligent to say?
Do the Chinese and Soviets have to do any genuflecting, or is it just Americans?
Obama has upped the stakes in Afghanistan and many are saying it could end up being his “Vietnam”. Maybe Bush wasn’t so dumb for not taking a larger part there? Or are we better warriors than the Soviets who had to leave Afghanistan in disgrace? If Obama has to up our troops more and the death toll rises will he get the so-called blame? I’m pointing out the limited relevance that the opinions of the average aging-hippies here have on the reality of what is going to transpire; and this probably projects to some extent back on McNamara’s controversial decisions too…
The only thing we can do is fight for goals and commit to them or quit and accept defeat…its part of the process. But, let’s not use scapegoats to assuage our guilty consciences. Feel free to correct this impudent pup, old-timers.

Dear Mr. Oliphant,
Love your cartoons. Particularly that one you got all the flack for, pointing out the ethnic cleansing of Ghaza. But here- you must think that people can never make recompense for their sins. Your cartoon either made no sense, or was woefully misguided. McNamara was that rare breed of politician who was willing to analyze himself and consider his past mistakes. He repented, and changed. His last decade was spent working tirelessly in the cause of peace, against nuclear weapons, and, as George Fox said, “against the cause of all war”. If you are going to use a stereotype of the afterlife, the proper place for him in your cartoon would have been Heaven, not Hell. That would have shown some originality and deep-thinking, rather than the simple stereotype of a man.

I wasn’t there either, puppy. Came only a week from having to appear for my physical, and then the draft ended. But what I asked you, did you really LIKE Vietnam? You didn’t have to be there, personally, to approve of the maneuver. All wars, since the turn of the 20th century, are about money. As long as war industries exist and corporations reap huge profits, there will be war. Vietnam was a classic example. Whether communism exists, or not, it really had nothing to do with the so called “mission.” The real purpose of Vietnam, and every other conflict we’ve been involved with ever since, is to reap profits for its shareholders. Plain and simple. The story, the “conflict”, is only subterfuge and a smoke screen to dazzle everyone and distract them.

Well… I think I corrected you pretty good. Have anything more intelligent to say?
