Remember how peachy-keen everything was when Bush was president? No wars. Booming economy. Rapid response to natural disasters. Unicorns frolicking on the White House Lawn. All those pigs flying around. Boy, those were the days.

Hump–you want everyone else to move on but you seem stuck with W fixation–you mention W in every cartoon.

W was almost 9 months in office when the biggest attack on american soil since Pearl Harbour happened. And yet his government wasn’t responsible for failing to protect the american people.

Obama is one month in office and republicans already attack him for not solving the financial crisis yet.

W’s legacy won’t be gone in a day.

No one took Obama for a messiah, he’s just a politician. The only one saying that are righties who want to make fun of us.

On the other hand, many thought he was the antichrist…

I don’t like this toon at all. Yes, redhead, the people on the ground are depicted as fools, or obamites, as you put it. Oliphant depicts Obama as rather vacuous without ideas.
Both depictions are non-sensical without basis in fact. And I agree with wittyvegan, how on earth could anyone — Rep, Dem, toonist, commentator, et al — think that the problems (and the mountains of debt) created during the last several years could be solved in 30 days.
I think it’s time to stop treating the dire problems we face as entertainment.
    double boo for this one

    ok then…how ‘bout this.

    my basis in fact…
people who blindly follow anyone scare me more than crooks or “opportunists”. (see: Germany 1933-1945)

you get so upset about GWB but you refuse to acknowledge that a good portion of your countrymen seem to be more than happy to give Obama more power than Bush ever dreamed of having.

I say, lets see what he has to say tonite before we judge Pat’s toon to harshly.

    redhead

i agree with you there … people who blindly follow a leader without engaging their own mind to gather a few facts and think things through scare me and that’s a bipartisan statement … those who proffer undigested claims of others and don’t even know what they really mean scare me …

but remember the man in that youtube clip you posted? that man has no power over others, redhead. He was excitable and excited and probably doesn’t have the best social graces, but he causes no harm, he has no power …
isn’t it fairly harmless if people choose to like their new president for his first 100 days?
on the other hand, rightwing nuts broadcasting on Teevee and radio do have the power to cause harm … my guess is if people were asked to define what is a journalist and what is a commentator, many couldn’t, and many more wouldn’t be able to correctly categorize some of the folks they listen to with such rapture every day

  22. believecommonsense

    believecommonsenseGenius_badge said, 9 months ago

redhead, Bush TOOK a lot of power, and Congress let him … violations of the constitution, unauthorized spying on U.S. citizens, creating “signing letters” on legislation saying which parts would be implemented into law and which wouldn’t … he took powers specifically NOT authorized by the constitution, and in the case of the signing letters, directly against the system of checks and balances designed by our founding fathers …
i don’t see the basis for your statement that people want “to give Obama more power than Bush ever dreamed of having.”

  23. redheadsandrazorbacks

    redheadsandrazorbacks said, 9 months ago

“on the other hand, rightwing nuts broadcasting on Teevee and radio do have the power to cause harm …”

    do you listen to them?

a Leftwing nut isn’t just as dangerous?

“i don’t see the basis for your statement that people want “to give Obama more power than Bush ever dreamed of having.””

Yeah…that’s my head train moving faster than a steroidal 10 year old eating skittles…

Do you think, if he is even half-way successful, a good portion of the population would give him “Chavez Like” changes?

I think its entirely possible but then again that’s just me thinking so there really is no basis other than me being so rattled by the way some of my fellow citizens look at the current resident of the white house

  24. believecommonsense

    believecommonsenseGenius_badge said, 9 months ago

I listen/watch news that has no discernible bias, but I long ago realized that I wanted to hear for myself what the ultra partisans said, so I do tune in occasionally to people I find less than truthful and very biased
I say again, red, that that young man on youtube is harmless and the leftwing nut organizations are already criticizing Obama for not implementing their agenda in the first 30 days
Going like Chavez? No, I can’t see that ever happening … the U.S. loves democracy too much … now we need a more level-playing field and more meritocracy and less aristocracy

FYI I could not pin this quote down, but in light if everything else recorded about Thomas it could be true:
Norman Mattoon Thomas (November 20, 1884 - December 19, 1968) was a leading American socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate for the Socialist Party of America.

The Socialist Party candidate for President of the US, Norman Thomas, said this in a 1944 speech:

“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of “liberalism,” they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” He went on to say: “I no longer need to run as a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democrat Party has adopted our platform.
I await your vilification, bile and @h¡t throwing with my usual good humor and skepticism. Y’all have a good night. As Red Skelton use to say,”God Bless”

So, oldlego, I’ll ask you the same thing I’ve asked of others…and have never gotten an answer. I doubt I’ll get one from you, too, but I’m ever the optimist:

Define “socialism” in your own words.

I’ll bite Danielsangeo. Socialism is where all the property, all the industries, and all the money earned from property and industries is owned by “the community as a whole” (from a dictionary). This is largely interpreted as being held by the government on behalf of the entire country’s population. This has, and never will be I wager, existed in its pure form in anything larger than a commune. I don’t think it is practical and/or there will always be people who will rise to a position of control who will corrupt the system. I have no problem with geniuses who change our life like Bill Gates getting rich. I have problems with rich people who think they shouldn’t have to pay taxes to the same level as the rest of us. (They have loopholes that allow them to pay, as a percentage of their income, much less than your normal middle class household.) I have problems with CEOs making 450% of the average salary, thinking they sh*t gold (into gold toilets), and thinking they deserve bonuses for their bad decisions. Spending as much on interior decorating their offices as would provide 200 people w/ a living wage plus benefits. THAT is as badly skewed in one direction as socialism is in the other.
