Last I saw, Burris is desperate to get back into politics, which explains why he would accept this clearly tainted position.
And acellist - don’t bet on it. Disney’s movie is pretty racist, and they’re rightfully wary about releasing it again. (I saw it a long time ago when I was just a kid, and even then I remember flinching at some of the live-action scenes.) If you check out eBay, you will find a few VHS videos, mostly without the tarbaby scene.

motive, Song of the South, got it by google search. It’s available on DVD, watched it last night. Laser Disc transfer, good quality and 100% uncut. Cheap too. As far as racism goes, a lot of great black actors would not have had much work if they didn’t play slaves, servants, and the like, especially with the fascination life in the latter half of the 19th century garnered in the Forties.

acellist - Yes, I agree that blacks wouldn’t have gotten much work otherwise, but that doesn’t mean we have to perpetuate it. The “fascination” you speak of was triggered by Gone with the Wind, which was a remarkable piece of nonsense as regards Southern culture, reinforcing the “but the slaves were happy ‘til those darned carpetbaggers came in” bushwah. Not to mention selling the myth that the Civil War was about states’ rights and not about slavery. We’re still getting that crud out of textbooks today, especially in the south (where I grew up). See Lies My Teacher Taught Me and Lies Across America. Wonderful books.

There are a whole passel of movies ahead of “Gone With the Wind” setting those standards, including the Marx Brothers’ “Day at the Races” and they run all the way back before D.W.Griffiths’ “Birth of a Nation.”
Amos and Andy’s “Check and Double Check” is one where the only black men with speaking roles are white men in black face, which is only redeemed somewhat with an appearance by Duke Ellington and his band.
It is clear that those standards have vanished from the present field of cinematic entertainment and have not existed for over forty five years in my field of entertainment.
However monochromatic, pusillanimous characters abound around every corner…
desiring attention in the worst way!

Sorry, acellist, wasn’t clear. I agree with the history, but I think the increase in fascination was attributable to GWTW, which was a massive blockbuster (and bestseller) in its day.
Funny how the Martha Mitchell Home in Atlanta keeps getting torched…
And DD - how did you get it to not bleep “D@mned?” It took out the word “cr@p” on me earlier!

Especially since the so-called Confederate flag is actually based on the battle flag (and a naval ensign), which means it’s not symbolic of “Southern culture,” it’s symbolic of the Civil War fought to perpetuate slavery. Lovely.

Magnus, The “battle flag” was based on the Cross of Saint Andrew. The Scot part of the GB Union Flag. Per haps, but not verified, by the influence of the Celtic heritage of the majority of the “hill billies” in the Confederate Army. Read “Born Fighting” by (now Senator) James Webb. It is why I voted for him without qualm even as a life long ‘publican.

oldlegodad- I know that that is the modern belief by advocates of the “Cause,” and I grew up in NC and am married to a a woman from a NC Scotch-Irish-some-Cherokee family. With all due respect to Webb, I think the historians disagree with him. Besides, it still doesn’t change my point. The modern myth is that the “Cause” was States’ Rights, and it wasn’t. The flag was the battle flag, meaning that regardless of its roots, it symbolized the War for Slavery. If they used one of the real (and rarely seen) Confederate flags, I might feel differently – there were three official ones, the first of which was very much like the standard US flag with fewer stripes.

motive, old71, “Born Fighting” is on the book shelf, a gift from my mother. Won’t go in to a looong rendition of detail. But she had the same argument with her sociology prof in th 40’s, her family was Scotch Irish. She maintained her stand till the day she died and she was well educated, Masters William and Mary with a major in education and minor in history.

Hump, I know where your mother was coming from. It was what I was taught in school. I out grew it. Webb’s book pointed out that the “Scotch-Irish” did in fact own slaves, but usually not in large numbers(as if that makes a difference)What surprised me was that slaves were used in industry, sawmills, cannon foundries etc. Our modern image of cotton fields and big house “servants” is arcane.
As for every other family in the Smoky Mountains claiming Cherokee blood I learned as a very young man that there was ALWAYS a G-Grand Daddy that married a Princess. No one ever claimed their G-Grand Ma ran off with a “Buck”. That would be as bad as…well, y’all know. I am so glad that except for some skin head retards that racial relations are so much better than when I was a kid.

Old71, Won’t argue about who shot john, ect, as there are characters in all walks of life. Mom’s argument was that the prof stated there wasn’t any thing as Scotch-Irish. Mom’s family came in from Scotland via Irland and landed in Charleston SC in the 1760’s. The family got started with a small drygoods shop but was burnt out because of support for the indepndence movement and fled to the Ohio Valley reigon.
