   That’s about as good as they’ve come up with. I drive on average 100 to 150 miles one way. What good do these cars do me? They talk about charging stations, Hell it takes me 1 hour to charge my battery drill. I guess we drive 150 miles and cool our heels for an hour or two while the car is charging. I think I’d ride a horse, might be quicker and a bleeep sight cheaper!!!!~

   Electric cars are meant for in-town driving, so they don’t have to go all that far. The vast majority of driving time is spent going from one place to another in the same city.

   Hybrids are a better value if you need to head onto the highway from time to time. You get the advantages of electric in town and the range of gas out of town.

   I drive 6 miles to and from work every day. A 40 mile electric car would be perfect as a second car. Plus electric cars don’t waste energy moving big pistons when they don’t have to. I want one.

   I suggest Pat Oliphant do a search on YouTube for the movie “Who Killed The Electric Car?”.

   Its also available on Amazon.

   Watch what GM did to the electric car they HAD and how they destroyed everyone of the cars they leased.

    I live in NM, If you’ve ever been here it’s 50 miles to the grocery store. Totally impractical. Even hybrids wouldn’t work here. Maybe hydrogen cars?

    Hybrids would work fine, ralph. They have the same range as regular cars, they just use half the fuel. But they do work better in city driving. Some people have experimented with solar-supplement hybrids - that might work pretty well in NM!

    To Pat Oliphant:

    Dear Pat, you are a brilliant cartoonist, but this time you are quite wrong. The Chevy eVolt is actually a hybrid, just like the Prius, but with a larger battery pack which allows it to run 40 miles on battery alone. It has a gasoline engine, coupled through a generator and electric motors, which can run it on the highway quite well. GM, in their wisdom, has elected not to call it a hybrid, to differentiate it from the Prius.

    Have I missed something here? All this debate about electric cars and hybrids working or not….I just thought the comic was funny because its presenting a ludicrous idea. :-p

    (And I thought “Who Killed the Electric Car?” was a very good movie. It was very interesting to see how the paths of the different parties involved played out and I actually felt sad seeing the cars sit and then be destroyed.)

    This comic and most of the comments totally miss the fact that GM’s “Volt” plug-in hybrid car switches to gasoline after 40 miles, so you can go as far as you want. The comic is only funny because it’s so ignorant. Anyone who does a quick Google search would know that the Volt solves exactly the problem that the cartoon raises.

    I’m all for mocking GM, they have had their heads in their !(#!s for decades, but this comic is just dumb, since the Volt is actually one of the few things GM is doing right.

    Wow this cartoon is so mis-informed it is almost unbelievable. Apparently this refers to the “Volt” a new plug-in hybrid vehicle that can go 40 miles on battery power, then automatically switches on the gasoline engine to continue with a range comparable to any other car. There is no 40 mile range limit, no cords. The point is that electric driving only costs the same as gasoline at roughly $0.75 per gallon. Since my commute is about 30 miles round trip, like most people this car would be great for me.
