Commander Davidson Bulloch, a former Confederate Navy submarine captain, gets more than he bargains for when he signs on as the first captain of Maryland's new "Oyster Navy" and sets out to rid the Chesapeake Bay of illegal oyster dredgers. Beset with an aging crew of misfits and his cantankerous iron-clad steamer, The Layla, Davidson quickly realizes he's dealing with more than just some purloined oysters; the nefarious pirate Treacher Fink has hatched a plan to summon the ghost of a legendary Chesapeake Bay waterman who has the power to control the sea and everything in it.

I love the Sunday Funnies look of this Monday comic. Gets the week off to a good start.

I’m enjoying the whole “Tintin meets Thimble Theatre” vibe.

Hey, Ben ~ Compulsive proofer here…Any reason for the hyphen in “in-tact”? The nineteenth-century books I regularly read use “intact,” as we do today. Just wondering.
Love your artwork! Phenomenal attention to detail.

Even though my time on gocomics is limited, I find myself going back to your strip over and over again just to soak up more of those little things that make up the general “atmosphere” of Blood’s Haven.

Very nice. Loving the history elements — learning a little about the men who helped build the country. And their superstitions, of course.

Yep, that pretty much nails two of my big influences here!

Short answer: I over-hyphenate.
Long answer: I write my dialog on the computer, but then often wind up making changes between then and when I letter…and since I pig-headedly insist on hand lettering, typos make their way in sometimes. Thanks for pointing this one out. It’s been noted and I’ll correct it if this strip ever goes to print!

Hey, thanks! I’m glad all that detailing isn’t going to waste.

Believe me no detail is missed by me. I like detail and it can add hours to doing the artwork but it is forever once it is down.

Love the historical detail too. Some mighty strange things were believed in the past and today too. Every page is something I wait for. Thanx for creating it.

Are those cobblestones or oyster shells in the road way?

Great story so far!

I think I got the name Maltby’s from an actual tavern in Crisfield, MD. I didn’t think of the “Louis” connection, though, from Tom the Dancing Bug.

I’d intended them as cobblestones… but now that you mention it, they should really be oyster shells, shouldn’t they?
