Over the Hedge, created by T Lewis and Michael Fry, takes a freshly skewed look at suburban living from the perspective of the animals who lived there first. The strip stars RJ, a mischievous raccoon, and Verne, his sensitive best-buddy turtle. Together they fight to save their wooded wonderland from the evils of encroaching suburbia but end up becoming distracted by wide-screen TVs, discarded fast food containers and the fun of wreaking havoc on the local homeowners' association.

I was expelled from the first grade back in 1959 for refusing to sing this song along with the rest of the class. I put my fingers in my ears and “sang” “I hate this song, I hate this song.” Y’know what, I still do! Didn’t like that song about being on top of spaghetti or the hairway to Steven either.

The Hairway to Steven?? Do you remember the words? I’ve never heard it. I liked “I’m looking over, my dead dog rover…” And Battle Hymn of the Night Wear. Got in lots of trouble for both of them.

I always wanted to get the proper lyrics for “To Anacreon in Heaven”, but that was long before the Internet and none of the local libraries had it.
Some may know it better as the tune used for the musical version of Francis Scott Key’s poem “The Defense of Fort McHenry”, known as “The Star Spangled Banner”.

A defunct act calling themselves the Sons of Anacreon post these as the lyrics to “To Anacreon in Heaven.”

I remember first hearing about “To Anacreon in Heaven” (not the one Steven took the hairway to) in a “Ripley’s Believe it or Not” paperback back in the mid-60’s when I was around ten years old. Considering the origins of our national anthem, I’ve always thought either “America the Beautiful,” “This Land is Your Land” or “Louie Louie” would be far better choices.

After reading about the Sons Of Anacreon, I can see why the song is so deucedly hard to sing, you have to be DRUNK to get that octave shift!

They shouldn’t be able to force first graders to sing songs they don’t like. That’s gotta be unconstitutional.

I’m wondering what took them so long to figure this out.

Yeah, NOW I can find them. 40 years ago, I couldn’t.
