How do we tell them that the ‘something right’ is being herbivorous?

Actually, horse manure is best, but cow manure is cheaper. Canine manure tends to kill vegetation, or so they say. That’s why so many neighbors are ready to murder anybody who let’s their dog poop on their lawn.

“They” tend not to know what they’re talking about, dog poop is more acidic than most, so you don’t want it in vegetable beds, but roses and some other flowers thrive on it.

Yep, the smell factor. Horse and cow manure smell so much better than dog poo.

Exactly right! When I was a kid we had horses, and people clamored to have the privilege of hauling away the stuff that had been left to age a few months. (When the stalls were cleaned we dumped the manure at the back of the farthest pasture and allowed it to age as fresh horse manure will burn plants.) I’d love some of that for my garden today!

When my husband and I had four pony-size dogs no one wanted any of the stuff we had to scoop to keep the yard clean. We bought a yard-vac from Sears just to do that one job, and it worked like a charm.

Actually, one reason we don’t use dog dung is worms. Farmers keep their animals treated for all manner of parasites and diseases while “pet” owners often don’t. Rabies fears also contribute. The “acid” can be tempered by proper composting with lime.
