Okay, now we have dogs and mice, but no crew.

I posit that there is no need for a “crew” at all. Not to put words in the Doc’s mouth, but if the strip is to go on and grow without pirate themes; why not just make the boat a cruise boat…

Loved today’s strip. Lighten up people!

Considering some of the cruise line horror stories, pirate ship turned cruise boat doesn’t seem too far a stretch.
Personally though, I have no problem with the animals.

It;s happened before that supporting characters take over a strip. The Piranha club was originally titled Ernie, who is now only a supporting character. Popeye was only meant to be a temporary character in a comic about the Oyl family. Monty began as Robotman where the main character was eventually written out of the strip.

Speaking of Monty - it almost looks like Meddick is trying to bring back Robotman but in a different format/persona.

I thought Mr Pi was a replacement for Robotman, but this cyber-clone is more similar in appearance

I agree, I like the strip as it is. It has always been good, and grew and changed over the years. The new characters are a welcome addition.
