Berkeley Breathed will be giving away $10,000 to a dog or cat shelter of a readers choice in conjunction to the Opus ending contest that was announced last week. The contest asks for readers to send in a one sentence entry guessing where Opus will be in his final paradise. The announcement says that clues have been the latest Opus strips found on Salon.com.
Yes, I know that it’s only a comic strip. That being said, thank you very much for the promise of Opus’ happiness. It’s actually more appreciated by more than you realize. Yes, I know, some of us should really get more of a life. Just promise us the little dog gets happiness, as well? And not just one of the two in the cell? Again, BB, thank you for a lot of laughs, and a lot of warmth. It’s you where Opus and the whole gang comes from, after all. And that has been one huge gift to all of us. We look forward to all your future work. (and maybe Opus and the gang could pop in once in a while and wave hi?)
Opus, the little penguin with the big beak and even bigger heart who sold more than 6 million books and had 70 million readers in the phenomenally popular comic strips, Bloom County (1980-1989) and Outland (1989-1995), now graces the Sunday comics sections of nearly 200 newspapers.
Opus got his break in cartooning when he popped up in Bloom County some 20 years ago and became an instant American icon. But Bloom County and its successor, the Sunday-only Outland, had several characters and Opus wasn“t always at center stage. Now he gets his chance.

Love this strip! Love all of Berkeley’s characters and have the books. REALLY gonna miss Opus, one of the main highlight of my Sunday mornings!
Hope his “forever” is in his field of dandelions with his friends and the loving, lovely ladies he so fantasized about.

Yeah they’ll probably take the dog but I hope all of the characters walk of into a sunset. Yeah that would be awesome :)

Big hearted Opus will sacrifice his chance at paradise for the pup who has been imprisoned for so long.
