Joe answers an eternal question for Grandfather.

Ruthie is a proper girl, if Buggy is going to give her something he had better pay for it.

I finally looked it up, and Ruthie is supposed to be six. Presumably Buggy is also. Times may have changed, but I can’t imagine a six year old boy being interested in girls. That said, Buggy has definitely got the upper hand in this relationship, or at least an equal hand. And what’s wrong with kids giving each other presents? We used to trade valentines (were compelled to, actually), and those could be interpreted as far more “romantic” than a talking pickle.

I had a girlfriend at age six. I just wasn’t aggressive about it.
