Raccoons are in some ways like our prehistoric pre-ape selves. They are omnivores, have hands and can stand upright. Though they can’t walk on two legs yet, they probably do not have a language either. But that may come should we become extinct an they don’t.

Many years ago I went on a camping trip with friends.
One night, raccoons got into the food cooler.

From fossils it looks like at least one branch of kangaroos were heading toward some kind of sapience but then abruptly went extinct 10,000 years ago. Flat face, prehensil hands and larger brain case point in that direction. What if? I have.

They’re among the most resourceful animals. It must take a lot to get one to starve to death.

They’re definitely intelligent animals – they use neighborhood storm drains as raccoon freeways in urban areas.

The recent Nature show on urban raccoons hypothesized that, by trapping or otherwise killing and removing the dumb raccoons, we are gradually breeding a smarter raccoon. Who might some day try to replace us. . . .

I know I would if they develop enough intelligence to think that deeply.
