    Grandpa asks, “Who’s lady GaGa?”

    A not or ain’t is a Scandinavian contraction that Anglos find useful even if it isn’t considered proper English.

    I don’t think it is the word “ain’t” so much as it is the double negative….

    “Ain’t ain’t in the dictionary ‘cause it ain’t there”
    Popular line in 3rd grade.

    That’s true. “Ain’t” is a contraction meaning “am not.” It is correct, in informal speech, to say “I ain’t.” But it’s never correct to say “My sister ain’t.” You wouldn’t say “My sister am not.”

    “Don’t say ’ain’t’;
    Your mother will faint;
    Your father will fall
    In a bucket of paint!”

    The professor droned: “In some languages, a double negative is a positive. In others, a double negative is an emphatic negative. A double positive is often an emphatic positive, but in no language us a double positive a negative.” From the back of the room, a student pipes up: “Yeah! Right!”
