Some store clerks don’t count the change when they give the difference back to the customer.
If she had a light box by her cash register, she could have used it to look for watermarks in the paper of the $50 bill.
Nick did that last thing to make fun of the woman. Instead of telling her to “stick it in your ear,” he stuck it in his own.

It’s increasingly rare when a large bill is paid in cash. You can be sure that cashier wouldn’t sniff a credit card.
