“Play’n” is how you pronounce “plain” with a Southern drawl.

Frank, Joe’s father, needs to tell him that the word means “flat” or “simple.” Frank could have told Joe that “plain” related to pizza was the right word.

Does Joe ever look at his spelling words BEFORE his father tries to help him?

Ruthie should never be in the same room when Joe is doing his homework or studying with his father.

Joe gave homophone examples; but, Ruthie’s example is a non-sequitur.

Apparently, Joe is a 2nd grader. My great-nephew, Brad, is in the 2nd grade and he makes A grades in spelling if he applies himself. In his school, the teacher gives the test on Wednesday and then again on Friday. If a student spells all of the words correctly on the 1st test, he doesn’t have to take the 2nd one. Week before last, he had a substitute teacher on Friday and she had him take the test again, which he still got perfect.

Potatoes were discovered in Central and South America. “Potato” is the English spelling of the Spanish word “patata.” And that is the Spanish spelling of the Taino word “batata.” You can find the word “batata” in the larger Spanish language only dictionaries where the definition refers to plants with tubers. I do have one of those dictionaries.

Joe obviously hates these spelling lessons with his lump-of-dough dad.
Maybe someone else could help him. Someone with imagination–like Old Man Foley and his can of whoop.

JAD, the main factor here is, Joe doesn’t apply himself to spelling.

He can’t, Ushindi. He’s too wired on Doc Toon’s nuclear coffee!

I rarely drink coffee and I do not take naps unless I am very sick.
