I like the overall joke, but there’s something I’m missing about the doll. Does it repeat what it “hears”? Otherwise I don’t get why or how the doll is “eeking”.

I think that’s Joe holding the doll at the window and shrieking.

Yeah, this one took a couple of readings before I got that in the third panel, Joe is returning to retrieve the doll, and it is indeed him that is shrieking in the last panel.
But Ruthie looks precious as usual in her little bunny slippers…
