    With adolescent boys, you don’t need a story/plot; just lots of action and stuff getting blown up. (Ditto for modern movies.)

    Not necessarily. Cool, overly complicated weapons and vehicles and lots of stuff going boom pretty much covers all the bases.

    Yes, they are called “Art house movies” and are produced on a shoestring budget. The summer blockbusters with giant budgets follow the other format.
