    I don’t understand why Pierre hasn’t proceeded to Step 2. Clearly the stick of butter has softened to room temperature (to the extent it ever will).

    Having a fire in an igloo probably wouldn’t work that well would it?….How did they keep warm?

    Warm is relative.
    When it’s 40 below outside, anything over freezing is warm.

    Actually, the inside of an igloo is supposed to be fairly warm… snow is an excellent insulator.

    Body heat and seal-oil lamps are sufficient to warm a small, well-insulated space. But in an igloo, “warm” is just below freezing. The butter would still be quite hard.
