The scary thing about ignorance is that it’s used chiefly by people who worship the great god-elephant or the great god-donkey.

Gary Trudeau once drew a child who had not finished his meal and was told “there are starving children in Georgia!” Today’s Non Sequitur has replaced that panel as my favorite of all time. Brilliant, Wiley!

Earthlings will come to Mars many times over the centuries, mostly in happy ignorance, for adventure or for freedom. They’ll be institutionalized for believing they’re from earth, will propagate vast apple orchards to enrich the atmosphere, unwittingly reduce Martian aborigines to melancholy ashes and disembodied souls by infecting them with chicken pox, and ultimately will leave a Martian wasteland to return homesick to earth, to face nuclear Armageddon in the bosom of family.
