Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day. The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo…Har-dee-har-har-har.

Since the 5th of May is just another day here in America and holds no special meaning to Americans, why are we celebrating? Why do Americans acknowledge and celebrate Mexico’s independence? In years past there has never been a national recognition or celebration of Syttende Mai. If we are going to recognize and celebrate Mexico’s independence shouldn’t we recognize and celebrate every other countries independence day as well? After all there are people of most every nationality living here in the United States, wouldn’t it be fair to acknowledge and celebrate their nation’s independence with as much fever as our own? Not!

If you want to celebrate the 5th of May go do so in Mexico. Here in America we only recognize one Independence Day and that happens to fall on the Fourth of July!

I’ve seen very little mention of National Cartoonists Day in the comics today.
I think it should be a day of parades and parties, but for some reason it’s not.
My job even refuses to even give me the day off with pay.

Yes, I know that not everyone who reads comics on the internet lives in the US. My point is simply that here in America, because of the rampant infestation of illegal immigrants from Mexico, the 5th of May has become an event that almost rivals the 4th of July.

I am in no way opposed to each sovereign nation celebrating their own unique holidays, please do so with all the excitement you can muster.

I am not even opposed to individuals celebrating holidays of their heritage within their own family units. My family regularly celebrates Syttende Mai and Santa Lucia (the winter-light festival), but when a foreign holiday is celebrated en masse with as much or more excitement as a Country’s own independence then something is seriously a wry. This is unfortunately, the sad state we Americans now find ourselves in.

For the same reason we “celebrate” St. Patrick’s Day. It’s an excuse to go out and drink too much.

Relax. No one actually celebrates Cinco de Mayo, not even in Mexico, where it’s considered a very minor holiday. Now celebrating cartoonists, that’s another matter entirely!

Apparently the neighborhoods you all live in are not overrun with illegals. Every year on the 5th of May, the Mexicans in my neighborhood drive around and around the neighborhood blasting Mexican music at full volume, honking their horns, and flying their Mexican flags all while obviously drinking their Mexican beer. Yes, even those driving are drinking and the cops do nothing about it.
I find it completely disrespectful to the United States of America to make such an ordeal out of a Mexican holiday, whatever their reason for the holiday.

You cannot compare this kind of over the top celebration with something like St. Patrick’s Day. I have never known an American of Irish decent to disrespect the US Flag while celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, yet these illegals openly disrespect Our Flag and Our Laws, not to mention disrupting the sleep and lives of those of us who have to get up and work the next morning.

As to celebrating Cartoonists, I have no problem with that at all! Cartoonists add levity and laughter to our world and should be honored in the same way we honor secretaries on secretaries day.

Sounds like your neighborhood might be the exception, not the rule, Leonard. Where I live I’ve never seen anything even close to what you’re describing. But I have seen lots of people who have no Mexican heritage whatsoever going out and having drinks for Cinco de Mayo, just for an excuse to go out and have some fun. They also drink on the 4th of July, St. Pat’s, Memorial Day, Earth Day, Columbus Day, Friday and Saturday.

Ok so I fell for the misinformation about it being Mexican Independence day, I can admit when I made a mistake.

However, it does not change the situation one iota. There are still loads of illegals flying their Mexican flags above the US Flag, committing crimes (driving while drinking), and generally making a nuisance of themselves. In the end, what they are celebrating is being proud of being Mexican, not being proud to be an American. It is that fact that I am annoyed and offended by.

I have never met an American of Irish decent that took St. Patrick’s Day to the point of being offensive. I enjoy a green beer and some tasty corned beef as much as the next guy but I have never met someone of Irish heritage that would dare to fly the Irish flag above the US Flag, at least not on US soil. I also enjoy a good German beer and a Bratwurst for Oktoberfest, but again I have never met an American of German Decent that would disrespect America.

I am not spewing ignorance or hatred. I can admit when I fell for misinformation (see my last post). I do not hate Americans of Mexican decent, however I also strongly believe that if you came to this country illegally, whether from Mexico or anywhere else you have broken the law and are therefore a criminal. Criminals of any kind cannot be tolerated by a society. While the punishment for any crime must fit the crime, all crimes must be punished. I would not call for the killing of illegals, that would be a punishment that did not fit the crime. However, raids by I.C.E. and the subsequent deportation of all illegals is a punishment that fits their crime. There is no hatred here, just solid patriotism.

While I agree with you about illegal aliens in this country (whatever country they came from), I find your blanket condemnation of all Hispanics in the US or even your neighborhood as illegals to be offensive. The vast majority of people of Mexican descent in this country are either legal immigrants or were born here. Calling them illegals just because they (or their ancestors) came from Mexico is just mean-spirited and displays a great deal of prejudice.

I do not classify all people of Hispanic decent as illegals, that would be silly. For example people of Puerto Rican decent are both Hispanic and American. Secondly, I have a number of friends of both Mexican and other Hispanic origin and I do not classify them as illegal either. Illegal is a status reserved for those people who came to this country without following the proper procedures for legally entering this country.
As to those in my neighborhood, you really do not know where I live so I will forgive your lack of understanding. Trust me it is a well documented fact that about 80% of the Hispanics in my neighborhood at any given time are in fact in this country illegally.

Finally, while the current interpretation of the law may disagree with me, I do not believe that just because you are born on American soil you are an American citizen. That is a fairly recent interpretation by liberal activist justices. To truly be an American citizen you need to be born of at least one parent who is an American citizen. Therefore, I find the whole argument of “anchor babies” to be ridiculous, those babies are no more American citizens than their parents are, regardless of where they were actually born.

Since when did love of one’s country and patriotism equate to hatred and racism? That is the most ridiculous notion that I have ever heard.

My ancestors immigrated to the US, I do not hate immigrants of any origin. However, criminals are criminals and if you came to this country illegally then you are not an undocumented person, you are a criminal. You broke the law. Regardless of your circumstances breaking the law still has consequences.

If you get caught speeding the consequence is a ticket and fine. If you get caught stealing the consequence is prison time. If you commit murder the consequence is death (at least in States with the guts to keep the death penalty active and not cave in to the bleeding hearts). If you come to this country illegally the consequence is deportation. It is as simple as that. It is not hatred. It is not racism. It is law.

As to moving out of my neighborhood, first of all I was there first why should I leave. Second, at this point in time I cannot afford to move.

As to who has the best beer. Whether it is Canada, Britain, or Europe I will let you all fight that one out. I will say that all three have better beer that the US does. Just do me a favor when you serve it to me please make sure it is ice cold because warm beer is really disgusting.

LeonardWatson - the Constitution, as amended, says in Amendment 14:
1: All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

This means specifically that anyone born within our borders is a citizen, regardless of parentage - and it’s specifically in the Constitution, not in a court decision.
