    “no justice for voters in CA”
    .
    - This is about justice for the minority that had their rights denied.
    .
    - Justice wins.
    .
    - Love is Love.

    Correct. As a German i say that the principles stated in Constitutions are more important as the will of the “people”. This is mainly because “The people” are too dump, too mean, too easily led into fascism to be trusted with decisions on this level. Liberals rule!

    Since marriage is all about procreation; new rule to fit your perspective of a multi-faceted issue:

    Man marries woman, they are automatically divorced if in the first two years of marriage they do not produce at least one child.

    @bhinkle,
    The words, “bride”, “groom”, etc., etc., have nothing to do with either the reality of “breeding” or “procreation”. Indeed, mammalian animals have been “breeding” and/or “procreating”, for thousands of years, without any necessity for external labels such as that.

    And, of course, what does a label have to do with the “breeding”, or “procreating”, capacity of, say, a Solomon, with some 100 “wives”, at least insofar as the Hebrew mythology book claims it to be? How do you fit any one of the hundred into the classification, “pair”? Yet polygamy IS, and always has been, one form of “marriage”, depending upon the culture of the people “marrying”.

    And, again, what does anyone of the labels have to do with Polyandry – multiple “grooms/husbands” – as are to be found among other cultural groups? Which is the “breeding pair”; and what are the others?

    Indeed, the presently so-called “nuclear family” is a rarity, in and of itself, when it comes to world cultures in human history. Yet, contracts between persons of the same gender are to be found throughout the history of civilization – none of them even remotely based upon “procreation”, of course. And, from culture to culture, and age to age, they have been generally regarded in the same way as contracts between two people of opposite-gender; to which the label, “marriage”, is both applicable, and frequently found in use.

    With the pro-choice lady in the pink sneakers, is this the US’s “there’s no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation” moment? ’cause that was pretty epic when Trudeau said it up here.

    Voters in California don’t get to decide about other people’s civil rights. What if voters in the state of North Carolina decided that post-menopausal women couldn’t get married? In the same way, that vote would be completely invalid. You don’t get to vote on civil rights. You don’t get to single out a group of people for different treatment.

    This is not a “liberal” issue, it is a human issue and the right thing was done.

    @cjr53

    The part where we voted to give the right to vote to minorities, to women, to eighteen year olds….

    the part where the amendments were ratified by vote….

    what world do you live in?
