Nick Anderson of the Houston Chronicle is an avowed independent who covers politics and contemporary cultural issues in a way that connects with readers. His loose, idiosyncratic style carries with it an unconventional message that has broad appeal. "I approach my work with a healthy skepticism for the ideological extremists littering our political landscape," explains Anderson.

And no one saw it coming.
Why, exactly, are you ’Mericans spending billions upon billions of dollars on all your intelligence agencies again?

Selling “terror”, of everything from a 4% tax increase on the rich, to global thermonuclear war is what keeps ’Merican capitalism going. Of course that “capitalism” is highly dependent on government contracts for the military-industrial complex, obviously means we have to reduce taxes on the wealthy, cut benefits to the middle class, and spend MORE on “defense”. Wait till the cockroaches show up at the door as the last remaining threat after all other life forms have been wiped out by either climate change, or just old fashioned greed, and folks MIGHT wake up? nope.

Them dang N. Koreans told us their rocket would be delayed till the end of the month so we took our spy eye off em for a minute.

Really? I’d think they’d be more likely to blow up their own people. Although I’ve heard they’ve lost their first satellite, so you may want to watch out for pieces of that landing in your yard.

Kinda hard to tell where that thing is gonna come down, since they have lost control of it, and it’s “Tumbling helplessly” in low orbit.
Must not of had enough Baking Soda and Vinegar to boost it all the way up…

I nominate DrCanuck to serve as USA’s intel spy in North Korea so we can know details of when they plan to fire missiles at any part of American soil.

I propose Obama reverse his OPPOSITION to the anti-missile system that Reagan proposed and promoted. We need it and Europe needs it….SDI.

@Dr Canuck, they were expecting it to happen on Christmas,or New Years, or possibly on the anniversary of the last dictator’s death. They were not expecting it to succeed as it has, but as North Korea doesn’t even let Chinese allies move freely throughout the nation, it is hard to put human resources there.
That said, North Korea is said to be sitting on over a dozen short range nuclear missiles and it is hoped that they have not yet made the weapon small enough to fit in rockets like the one just launched. A more immediate threat is North Korea selling rocket technology to Iran and other such states.
If North Korea launches a nuclear weapon without the support and permission of China, China will destroy NK just to prevent nuclear counter strikes that would contaminate Chines territory and waters. If China gives permission, it’s game over anyway. The world will glow.
So, to answer your question-
We spend billions on intelligence because it helps keep us, and other nations, a little safer. Sometimes we screw up, but usually, we do pretty good. They just don’t talk about it if they can avoid it.
Respectfully,
C.

Obviously they aren’t too worried about our “leader”.

^apparently they weren’t too worried about dubya either. North Korea went nuclear on bush’s watch, and nobody said much of anything.

Bush had his eye on Iran as part of his mid east remodeling project.

Don’t believe that for a minute.

Notice it hasn’t gone “BOOM” yet.

Now let’s gin up the reslug comments. My God, this could have been a nuclear weapon that splashed down somewhere in the PACIFIC OCEAN and DIDN’T DETONATE!

Sorry to break it to you but we have seen it coming for a long time. It’s sad and all they can do is lob it at Japan or South Korea.
But don’t worry, America will protect Canada since you can’t protect yourselves.
