Nick Anderson of the Houston Chronicle is an avowed independent who covers politics and contemporary cultural issues in a way that connects with readers. His loose, idiosyncratic style carries with it an unconventional message that has broad appeal. "I approach my work with a healthy skepticism for the ideological extremists littering our political landscape," explains Anderson.

Started in 2006 when we had a Democrat House and Senate. 2008 is when Obama took over and that was all she wrote.

The republicans have promised us that they will never weaken our military. Kill everything else in the budget off but keep our empire strong and expanding. Romney has promised to build new ships and subs. We’re number one in the world in military budgets already.

I’m glad you put the dimlibs straight, explaining that Obama became president on 3 Jan ‘08. The dimlibs just don’t understand that at all.

the #1 constitutional duty of the federal government is DEFENSE.
Since WW2, the US Defense has been depended upon by Americans plus Europe, plus Japan, plus Canada and Mexico and many other allies such as Israel. That requires the biggest defense department in this world.

the world is perhaps more dangerous now than during the Cold War, with no national armies a threat but a worldwide Jihadist War on “infidels” in progess since 1979 with no end in sight. We would be insane to unilaterally disarm now.

Obama took over January 2009 and I’m sure HQuinn just made a typo……the Debt that 8 years of GW Bush left was $10.6 trillion. Obama had the Democrat senate and the House was Democrat until 2011-2012, 2 years only GOP in O’s 4 years. Before the end of his 4th year the Debt rose 60% to $16.3 trillion, with 4 years of $1 trillion plus deficits and 10 years of estimated deficits over $1 trillion a year! (If the USA is not bankrupt and collapsed by then)

The national Debt on 20 January 2009 was $11.910 trliion. The current national debt is $16.164 trillion and the difference between those two numbers is not 60%. You must be a girl because you have no ability to do math…

The Army general in charge of armor told Congress we did NOT need to spend over $4 BILLION to upgrade a thousand or so M-1 tanks stored in the desert, because they ARE NOT NEEDED! A majority of the “congresspersons” voting to do the upgrades and spend the money anyway, received large campaign donations from the companies scheduled to do those unneeded “upgrades” the Pentagon DOES NOT WANT!
While both parties did get payoffs, the fast majority were Republicans. Mitt now wants to increase “military spending” on projects the military DOES NOT WANT OR NEED. How do we spell waste, fraud, and fiscal cliff? Try starting with: M-I-T-T.

btw, the cliff was driven over by “W” and Republicans in 2008, yes, as note the crash date, and "W"s budget was still in force until Oct 2009.

Please! The Republicans controlled the White House for 8 years. Not one of you so called conservitives gave a rat’s behind about deficit spending until the Democrat took office. The moment a Republican takes office you’ll stop caring again.
