They matter because they were purposefully walked in hopes their use would advance the very anti-gun agenda this cartoonist is pushing. Oh, libs. Shallow in substance, deep in BS.

JM, you lie. The government bought and walked no guns, rather local prosecutors failed to follow up on their findings due to fear of the NRA. You’ve been fooled by Fox, so read the Fortune magazine reporting, and quit spreading the “BS” you rightly decry.

30,000+ gun deaths in the U.S. every year, we hold the record. Yes, indeed DO look at the record for countries with valid gun control laws, like New Zealand, where guns are NOTBANNED”, but the owners are registered. The gun deaths are minor, even by “accidents”. Japan is tough and very few occurrences.

Sad as the Colorado event is, the toll represents only ONE THIRD THE DAILY TOTAL FOR THE NATION!!

How about we leave it at this… The US is crazy in some regard because we kill people with guns at a far higher rate than anywhere else in the world (that isn’t playing host to a war). So maybe, you and the liberals among us can get together and figure out how to get that gun violence rate down. Just saying guns are wonderful and everyone should have one doesn’t help – we have one of the highest gun-ownership rates in the world, and that hasn’t helped. So how do we lower that gun violence rate?

I’ve done a lot of reading on F & F and nowhere, even in blatantly political sites, did I ever run across that particular theory. And that includes a Fortune Magazine report.

Oddly, the Swiss are incredibly well armed with 600,000 full auto weapons alone in their homes (The structure of their military) yet don’t have enough gun crime to keep full statistics. Maybe we have a cultural problem.

    @ahab

I just finished reading that piece. Thank you.

On ARodney: I can’t imagine a U. S. Attorney being afraid of the NRA and I can’t be fooled by Fox because I don’t watch them. Everything I’ve read points to the U. S. Attorney in Phoenix sanctioning F&F, ATF doing their job, and the U. S. Attorney doing a minimal amount of follow up and then leaving the ATF people swinging in the wind. (the really, really short version) Thanks again for the heads up on that article.

I think you are right that we have a cultural problem with guns. As I understand it, in Switzerland every male is expected to serve in some capacity. (Women can volunteer.) It is considered a man’s duty and right to serve. They even find military jobs for deaf, or blind, or wheelchair bound individuals who are determined to serve. They might not be operating weapons, but they do something to help keep the country free. And yet, they have very little gun violence. I wonder why. Is it better training, more education in morals, what?

Mike, a few comments. The swiss military rifle is a semi automatic. All males are drafted at age 20, most of them serve in the army with basic training, then sent home with those rifles, with some sealed ammo. For the next few years, the go for 3 week refreshers, or to the range to show proficiency with the rifle. Any unauthorized use of the rifle is severely punished. Private ownership, especially of handguns, is controlled and restricted.
And yes, we have a cultural problem. The Swiss have a much better sense of community responsibility. See healthcare.as an example.

There’s links all over about the gun-walking hoax. Basically, none of the guns were purchased by the ATF, they were purchased by people who were selling them to Mexican drug cartels. But just because the ATF knew what was happening, they could not stop them because there are no enforceable laws against trafficking. Here’s a link out of hundreds:

The Swiss have a health care system that actually works well. Did we send anyone over to see why? No. Instead our upcoming system is put together by drug companies, lawyers, politicians, insurance companies, bureaucrats, and assorted other lobbies that pay their way into Congressional offices. We wind up with a 1700 or 1800 page law. I dread to see the thousands and thousands of pages of regulations that will be written to implement that law.

The articles I read listed 600,000 (plus or minus0 as automatic. They may have meant semi-auto.

Life has changed in Switzerland! They are issued automatic rifles and after time served, the firearm is converted to semi automatic. Much ado about nothing as the liberals confiscated the ammo.

Switzerland Strips Citizens of Gun Rights: http://concealed.wordpress.com/2007/10/27/switzerland-strips-all-citizens-of-gun-rights/

From Wikipedia: In October 2007, the Swiss Federal Council decided that the distribution of ammunition to soldiers shall stop and that all previously issued ammo shall be returned. By March 2011, more than 99% of the ammo has been received. Only special rapid deployment units and the military police still have ammunition stored at home today.[

AMC is already doing that with their theaters – and I heard that on NBC News. One other movie theater company (I forget which, but can be found on the same source) is banning all costumes to its venues.

The average citizen cannot be trusted with a gun. Only the government and the police should have access to guns. Redneck republicans kill.
