Nick Anderson of the Houston Chronicle is an avowed independent who covers politics and contemporary cultural issues in a way that connects with readers. His loose, idiosyncratic style carries with it an unconventional message that has broad appeal. "I approach my work with a healthy skepticism for the ideological extremists littering our political landscape," explains Anderson.

Same performance potential, much different price. Sorry, the F-22 is a piece of junk that should have been abandoned years ago. It may go fast, and stealthy, but if it never gets more than half-way to its target, it’s worthless.

Well, there’s a big savings right there on that pretty but useless piece of hardware. Perhaps those bucks will go directly to pay for some poor but deserving American for health care.

Yes, the people on welfare in my neighborhood do not have enough bmw-leases, cell phones, plasma-televisions, i-pods, and all the expensive Milk, meat, and groceries us other people can’t afford.

TheLoveDoctor: It is incorrect to say, “…[things] that us can’t afford.”
It is what “we” can’t afford. The subjective pronoun is required.

Re thelovedoctor: I know it varies but I was shocked to read some of the absolute necessities that people on welfare must be given.
“Persons who submit a REACH OUT WIRELESS® application, together with supporting documentation, and who meet the eligibility requirements will receive a free cellular phone with 365 days of service and a free allotment of airtime minutes each month for one year.

GN: If you want them off of welfare, how are employers supposed to reach them? A telephone isn’ t a luxury in the world today, and a mobile phone hasn’t been a luxury item in at least ten years.

In our world, you can’t get a job without a phone. You can’t make appointments for the doctor (say, for the disabled) without a phone. There’s a lot you can’t do.
You never know how important something like that is in a society until you don’t have it.
Unfortunately, it’s not easy to get a REACH OUT WIRELESS even if you’re in need. You have to have access to a phone to get it! (Some people in need use church phones for those calls). Even when you are eligible, it takes weeks, sometimes months to get one.

CDMBH: I am financially a very successful physician. I don’t have or need a “mobile” phone. If patients (using your example-employers) want to reach me they just call me at the office or at home. Mobile phones are a great luxury but obviously (see me) not a necessity.
We are not discussing a simple phone. Those have been mandated for welfare recipients for years. And cdward if you make the call from home you still can get the job.

Exactly, GNW. Again, the responsibility for him/herself is best left in the hands of the individual, or you are looking at fraud, abuse, and waste.

Oh, I beg your pardon, now the middle class can’t afford basic foodstuffs? Are you kidding me? It’s fine for people to say they prefer pizza, hamburgers or chips over the bleeep veggies, but to say they can’t afford them is absurd. How come they are not the ones on welfare, then?
