Nick Anderson of the Houston Chronicle is an avowed independent who covers politics and contemporary cultural issues in a way that connects with readers. His loose, idiosyncratic style carries with it an unconventional message that has broad appeal. "I approach my work with a healthy skepticism for the ideological extremists littering our political landscape," explains Anderson.

You know, the serpent that didn’t exist until the U.S. hatched the serpent carefully, fed it in Iraq and made it nice and strong and told Iraqis they were lucky we came over to their country to show them the snake and how scary it is. See how muscular the cartoonist depicts the U.S? See how puny the little scrawny Iraqis are? Why, you’d think oldlegodad was snickering at the Iraqi dilemma! It was our snake. We chose it and brought it there. Go to hell, oldlegodad.

Hmm, and when Saddam was in charge of a secular government, HE was portrayed as the huge bully (which he WAS, with our support for decades), and we’re supposed to believe that a country that at least had control of its own affairs can’t again? If Bremmer and Rumsfeld hadn’t done away with the police force and military, but only “gleaned” their system and ejected the bad apples, we might have been done with our “goal” (whatever THAT was) in six months to a year.

dtroutma: I hope you’re right but fear you’re wrong. After America destroyed the country’s infrastructure and demolished its culture, and after the educated and intelligent fled the country, Iraq may very well be a failed state. They are a proud and capable people, but as individual cultures, NOT as a European-defined country. Now we’ll see.
