Nick Anderson of the Houston Chronicle is an avowed independent who covers politics and contemporary cultural issues in a way that connects with readers. His loose, idiosyncratic style carries with it an unconventional message that has broad appeal. "I approach my work with a healthy skepticism for the ideological extremists littering our political landscape," explains Anderson.

Yeah, the wingnuts and Al Qaida aren’t that far apart in mentality.

Perfect! They’re both out of touch with reality, so they both project their phobias on everyone else!

You could go along way with this analogy. al Qaeda are also right-wing conservatives, both they and their American cousins hate liberals, liberal democracy, and the Liberal Arts, both look to religion to guide their behaviour and to impose morals on society, both believe in hard-line foreign policy and relations, both love their guns…one could go on and on!

Canuck, you may be on to something!

Canuck - also tend to be against women’s equality (Coulter makes jokes about revoking women’s right to vote), invade people’s privacy, etc…

Women should have the right to vote, just not to drive ducks his wife’s shoe Just kidding! lol@the cartoon. Seriously though, I wonder what effect this new diplomacy will have. Zero on radical Islam, they’re not willing to listen, but what about the moderates? I’m interested to see how Obama’s tack works out.

TrickyPickle: Well, since the moderates outnumber the radicals by several exponential orders of magnitude…
However, in my experience, moderates don’t usually go after the radicals in their own religion….
This should be interesting.

TrickyPickle and danielsangeo, agreed. You can’t budge those who don’t want to play nice. But the moderates DO outnumber the radicals on both sides, and my experience with Islam is that moderates truly do want to have a constructive and peaceful relationship with their neighbors near and far. It is completely reasonable and appropriate for our president to reach out to them – despite what the extremists here or there say.
