Nick Anderson of the Houston Chronicle is an avowed independent who covers politics and contemporary cultural issues in a way that connects with readers. His loose, idiosyncratic style carries with it an unconventional message that has broad appeal. "I approach my work with a healthy skepticism for the ideological extremists littering our political landscape," explains Anderson.

To some it’s not torture… just a way to live, sad to say!

I work for a healthcare company and anything done for Medicaid has to be written in 6th grade language… what on earth makes anyone think that people do (or CAN) read the fine print. At the very least it should be bullet points in normal font.
1) We can do whatever we want to you.
2) We WILL do whatever we want to you.
Now is that so hard?

Society shares the blame there… anti-intellectualism is a strong force in this country and it shows in our students. They can name all the contestants on American Idol for the last 3 seasons but not find the US on a map.

Anti-intellectualism is encouraged in our society. Just had our school budget votes. Know why the budget passed? Because if it didn’t, interscholastic sports would be cut. Let’s face it, we pay athletes and musicians immoral amounts and then complain if a teacher with 25 years experience makes more than the janitor. We think about sports when we think about school – and then wonder why it’s so hard for kids to think there’s any value in what they learn.
It is a cultural crisis because we live in a society that does not VALUE education. As a former teacher (not for a very long time - that wasn’t my ultimate calling), I know how frustrating it is to have what you do be held in such low esteem in society.
