   Not a joke — cooties used to be slang for head lice. So yeah, when a kid was known to have “cooties” — yeah, you ran!

   Cooties may come from WW I. It made appearances in the trenches and may be rooted in a foreign word similar: kute.

    Incidentally, the PubMed database has nothing on cooties, but does list 550 medial journal articles on cookies.
