    Ah yes the French Revolution, and example of a revoltion that failed horribly and turned into a long term blood bath. The American Revolution was successful, the French a bloody failure. Should be remembered for that contrast.

    I think the French revolution failed because the enemies (Old Regime) were right there to be killed.
    In the American revolution the enemies (Royal governors and army) were able to leave. Of course, Loyalists still got killed or forcibly exiled but the deaths were nowhere near the scale of the Terror.

    @ujean

    The Revolutionaries had the taste of blood and ran with the blood lust ever lasting. Give me a Pez dispenser instead.

    Why on earth would you consider it a failure? They certainly got rid of the blood sucking parasites. Then they conquered half of Europe.

    Actually, historically, most revolutions go to several extremes before finding a middle point. Look at France, Russia, Iran, even what’s happening in the “Arab Srping”. Or the late Roman Republic. Even Great Britain had Cromwell and the restored Stuarts before the “Golden Revolution”. America was an exception—which some point as due to George Washington being like Cincinaticus and giving up power after two terms.
