After directing three plays by myself, I collaborated on a production of “You Can’t Take It With You” with two other directors. It took us 3 to 4 hours to cast the play and was pretty much exactly like the last panel.

That’s the great thing about being a cartoonist, eh, Nathan? You can do it all yourself! :)

In terms of a manageable workload, absolutely. The play turned out really well and working with the other two directors was a great experience. Casting is never easy but it was a tough night, with each of us trying to get it to be our way. Walt Disney and Howard Ashman have said a lot about the relationship between theatre and animation, and they are completely collaborative media that end up with stronger results than any one person could accomplish on their own. There is certainly a comfort that Charles Schulz has spoken of in being able to sit down and take complete control of the world while drawing a comic strip. In my experience, drawing a comic strip is a paradoxical experience of simultaneous disequilibrium (massive stress) and equilibrium (comfort).
