    I like Mutt’s expression in the last panel.

    You mean even in those days two bucks wasn’t considered a lot of money?

    @Arye Uygur

    A “lot of money” is relative. There are many people in third world countries who live on less than a dollar a day. They would probably consider two dollars a “lot of money.”

    You wouldn’t see a daily strip these days with so many panels and so much dialogue! These old strips were printed many times larger than what we consider acceptable now.

    I guess this strip pre-dates welfare.

    @SUSAN NEWMAN: They had help back then pre LBJ and his “great Society.” It was called “Relief” and you had to work to get money or had to pay it back later.
    No food stamps(hookers will take them in payment) or EBT cards or SSI for phony disabled, etc ad nauseum.

    Mutt misunderstood; Jeff needs two male deer to sell to the zoo for hundreds of dollars, so he can pay off his debts.

    A friend when in need, is a friend indeed. But a friend in need—————is a pest.
