    Since all of the sales staff are dressed in pin stripe suits, I am guessing this would be about the late 20s or early 30s. Decorum of that time period required that all sales staff bend over backwards to be polite to customers - and especially when the customers were female. So Jeff’s astonishment when he discovered the customer had politely left would have been quite real for that time period.
