   I think I heard some research recently that said at least one third of the current (homo sapien) population has some Neanderthal ancestry.

    No reason to think we could, either. Most other species, we can’t tell without checking genitalia. Even other primates – could you tell the male and female primates apart at the zoo if they were wearing clothes?
