She’s got a point. If her tastes are more similar to her friend’s, then that would be more relevant to her. Critics are simply one person’s opinion, no more or less valid than anyone else’s, even if they act in a herd.

I usually find that if a critic dislikes a movie that I will like it, one man’s cheese is another man’s rotten milk.

Before I stopped listening to friends and developed a stable of critics to listen to I missed a number of great films. If you regularly read a set of reviewers you will be able to reliably tell which films that you would like, but you need to know where your tastes match up for what type of film with each critic. You COULD achieve the same effect with friends, provided that your friends see a LOT of movies and early in the release cycle.
