We had two channels when the weather was good.
Way back when, we had a TV that had a diode that would burn out. There was a cup of diodes and a soldering gun right next to the TV that had the back off.
When the TV gave out, unplug it, solder in a diode, and you were good for a few weeks, or maybe a few minutes.

I remember watching my old man use the tube tester at the store.

My paternal grandmother was an invalid and the family bought her one of those really early TV cosoles. By the time my family had one the box was a manageable size and my dad cut a hole in the wall between the kitchen table and the “den” (spare room). With a turntable on there, we could all watch either at the table or on a couch in the den. Dad also installed a window AC unit in the discharge ductwork from our gas furnace. As the oldest child, I got to help dad with his household projects. My brother never wanted to (he was 3+years younger and never learned anything useful, just cheated people while pretending to work). I can remember using a tube tester on our TV after I was married.

My wife and I bought a second hand TV to begin married life. I think it was a 17 inch B/W. The Sears catallog laying on top of it was to hit it to make it come on. Never failed!
