The shirt costs $30 because someone’s willing and able to pay $30 for it. And you only got $0.02 for sewing it? Federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, meaning you worked about 10 seconds with a sewing machine paid for by the owner on cloth paid for by the owner in a factory paid for by the owner. I could go on, but the amount of deaf ears upon which this will fall does not justify any further effort on my part.

I met a woman in Thailand who sewed shirts for a living, for a few $ per day. Which translated into a LOT of bhat. She certainly wasn’t getting rich, but she very much wanted the job; otherwise her choice was to be a prostitute. So, the question is, are we exploiting her? If she had been paid US minimum wage, the rest of the economy would have gone to hell in a handbasket.

The capitalist then sells the product at its value. The profit is already in the product, generated in the process of production itself. It’s realized at the point of sale. If it’s bought by a retailer, an additional amount is added on to the retail price. This is not additional surplus value, but instead is the imposition of an unequal exchange between the merchant and the customer. The customer is paying more than the actual value of the commodity, because of the greater market power of the retailer.

Stephanie is right. If we sewed the shirts in our garages and then hawked them on the streets we could cut out the middle men and get what, maybe $00.15 per shirt? The attractive females could then turn a few tricks if they wanted to boost their profit margin.

Comics is right on the money and for those who disagree with it I like to post what capitalism is. I have noticed that capitalist apologists don’t even know what they trying to justify:

Capitalism means having a class of people who get incomes NOT from working, but from having a surplus of money and getting more money by lending that money to others who have a shortage of money, for a return on their investment. A capitalist is someone who lives off of UNearned income, by providing capital.

    Capitalists are the real freeloaders!
