So THAT’S why so many people risk their lives to come to America, because it’s so much more horrible than their own country.

The system is highly organized
Class society is constantly becoming ever more highly organized, increasingly complex and globally interconnected. It has constructed solid institutions with which to exert power in every realm of life. The state is just one form, with its major power tools the military and police, along with its courts, legislatures, down to the smallest government office in the smallest town. Economic power is another tool of domination — the ruling class has seized control of the ways we fulfill our basic needs (starting with land, followed by all our means of subsistence/production). Our survival is now in their hands — they can threaten to withhold these necessities unless we agree to participate in our own exploitation through labor.
Additionally, power is asserted through ideological domination, via the culture: the media, the arts, customs and traditions, religion and so on, which persuade us (with varying degrees of subtlety) that this is the best of all possible social arrangements. Oppressive social structures such as the family, patriarchy, institutional racism and nationalism hinder our ability to unite and thus strengthens their position against us.

@Ms. Ima
No it is better than their own country, depending, until the past 30 years. Fewer come to stay these days.

Stephanie has a very good point that I agree with today.

a) The USA is not (supposed to be) a democracy. It is supposed to be a republic. A democracy does not protect the rights of the minority.
b) The USA permits the population to own guns. This is to enable the population to protect themselves from many things, including the government, or those who would overthrow it, depending.
I find it fascinating that the progressives can see the motes, but not the beams. For instance, they are all for larger government, even when this requires ignoring the constitutional limits on the governments activities… but are against governments that ignore laws?!?
They claim the government uses power to oppress the people, but generally it’s the conservatives that argue for private rights to own arms, and liberals who want to disarm the population.
I love referring people to this strip because it so perfectly illustrates the illogical and mutually contradictory opinions of socialists.

Stephanie is obviously a product of our wonderful education system. The founding fathers were very opposed to a democracy because they could learn from history. Democracy evolves into government by uninformed rabble and removing the rights of citizens.
I do believe Stephanie should move to North Korea to learn how her view of government really works.

And in a dictatorship like Syria the first thing that goes is the freedom to speak to each other via the internet. Just watch what happens in the middle east to see how revolutions evolve. Not a pretty sight.
