”For America to prosper, we need to revive our manufacturing sector. We’ve learned the hard way that an economy based on financial gimmickry and the shuffling about of debt simply doesn’t work.”

    Thank you, Thompson.

    FINALLY!!! Someone who gets it!

Protectionism prevents jobs from going overseas!

Protectionism prevents big corporations like Wal-Mart from setting up shop and killing every local business within a four mile radius.

    Protectionism creates wealth!

And for the illegal guys who will show up later: Protectionism prevents illegals from competing with your A$$ for the same job with less pay. You could actually make a living being a janitor for a company that makes things here!

I’m a conservative Republican and am all for Protectionism. “Free Trade” is a total sham, anyway.

Bravo. Someone willing to say protectionism does have a proper part to play in keeping us healthy and wealthy. We just need the wise back.

So y’all want to return to those thrilling days of yesterday when the Lone Ranger imposed tariffs on every thing and so did every one else and what happened? 1929!!

Finally, somebody with a corporate soapbox is saying what I’ve been saying since the early 1980s,

    Thanks, Mike.

Wow– great cartoon. Says it so simply but with conviction.

Lego, ‘29 wasn’t caused by tariffs.
It was speculative investing in the stock market by banks.

I endeavor to buy products made in this country, but it is getting harder every year.

The other day I brought home some frozen green beans from the grocery store. When my wife noticed that it was a “Product of China”, those suckers got taken back.

Can someone please explain to me how it is profitable to import FROZEN GREEN BEANS from the other side of the planet? And why is it that anyone who disagrees with “free trade” derided as unenlightened?

It’s because Republicans are immoral greedy bastids, and Democrats are lying elitists who know what side their bread is buttered on. Otherwise, we would block imports; flood the world with our corn, rice, and wheat ; drill our own oil, natural gas , dig our own coal, fire up nuclear power plants; close our national borders; etc. We could actually even give every American, and every black American, their 40 acres and a mule; in a new “land rush” to even things out once and for all and start anew for everyone.

    Redeemd;
most communities have a farmers’ market, usually on saturday morning. Buy your produce there. Your food will taste better, your money will stay close to home, the environment will fare better, and you will get to know some of your neighbors.

I believe that Abe Lincoln once said that if we import they (England, France, etc.) will have our money and we will have the product. If we build it here we will have both.

I hear oldie’s note of caution and want to heed it. For the most part, however, I agree that the “Free Trade” craze has caused a lot of harm. Re: the cartoon, It would seem that there aren’t a lot of manufacturing jobs left to kill. I’ve often wondered if the government could pass a law that said we import nothing from any company that does not pay at least the US minimum wage to all of its workers. If something like that ever could happen, I’ll be we’d lose fewer factories.

I’m not an Obama fan, but I try to give credit where it’s due, so: “Thank you Mr. President for putting a tariff on cheap Chinese tire imports. You probably saved a few lives as well as jobs.”

Have to concur with TheShakeyPup. I’ve mostly voted Republican because of their claims of smaller government. Worthless lying party. The Democrats are worse, plus they don’t even try to have a facade of morality. At least they’re more honest in that respect.

I’ve been researching the Constitution party. I like a lot of their stances. I’m sure I’ll be pestered about “throwing my vote away”, but I’m starting to realize that’s what I’ve been doing every time I vote Democrat/Republican.

The lesser of 2 evils is a trown away vote. My choice usually comes in 4th, with about 4% of the vote, but you can’t blame me for the clowns in DC.

I don’t think that it is right to call one 3 year 35% tarrif “Protectionism”

Don’t let the right define this issue too!

Calling this “Protectionism” is like calling it “Racism” when you don’t like the sitting in a restaurant and a guy at another table keeps saying MF this and MF that (let’s say that the is also black and you are not.)

The Left has to learn not to fall into every single pothole the Right leaves.

And the people who consider themselves “Right wingers” have to learn to see things for what they really are and not just for the rhetorical advantage they give you.
