I love this toon! The things the status quo supporters are saying are just as ‘magical’ as other fairy tales.
Thompson, you captured a truth in a very creative way.

HOWGOZIT, you mean when we found that Bush lied to get us into this massive waste of a war in Iraq? No, wait, we were told to shut up because we were traitors.

oldlego, I looked at it, skimmed it, didn’t read it, too sad, saw that tiny little hand on the mother’s thumb … but did read where the mother said she knew the baby couldn’t live, too premature

^ BCS I did read it all and my reply is here Steve Benson 2009-09-11
My conclusion was:
It appears both the USA & UK follow similar guidelines when it comes to premature babies. Nothing to do with single payer health care then.
cdward said, 2 months ago
oldie, I understand that outrageous example. However, I’ve spent enough time in hospitals with grieving parents to know that a) one sad story does not a system make, b) we have our own outrageous rules (often instituted by the private insurance companies) that cost lives.
If you want to show that their system is flawed, why bother? Everyone knows. But that doesn’t mean that our system isn’t equally flawed, and at greater cost.
However, the cartoon was about Joe Wilson’s statement about illegals – and in that statement, Wilson lied or at the very least used the wrong phrase (“I don’t believe you” might have been more accurate) and did so in a wholly inappropriate manner in front of the entire country.

Once again motive–congress voted to go to war with same info Bush had. Obama does not lie though, he just gets misinformastion and repeats it.
PlainBill said, 2 months ago
Howzie, Where do you think Congress got the distorted information? Contrary to what the Bush apologists pretend, Congress does not have it’s own foreign intelligence service. They received only the information Bush/Cheney wanted them to get.
HOWGOZIT said, 2 months ago
You are too plain Plain Bill and your last statement shows not too informative on Congress.

Then Hilary was also very mistaken. I remember leading up to the invasion, when there was talk of the UN doing further investigation, I was saying to my daughter (who was in Military Intelligence, Pa. Reserve) “maybe they will be able to resolve it peacefully”. She said, “Mom, the powers that be have all the plans laid out. We are going in.” She did 2 tours over there, 1 in 2003 and 1 in 2006 and I sweat blood until she got home.

the first time a plan of taking out Sadaam Hussein and having the US be a ‘partner’ in its oil occurred during the first month of Bush 43’s presidency, as reported in books written by journalists and his first Treasury Sec.

bcs, do you know how many contigency plans must be drawn up on a constant basis by the White House staffers/consultants? Maybe MotiveMagus can enlighten us - Let alone those concerning a country that is defying no-fly zones and U.N. resolutions; in a region where anti-American and anti-Democracy governments rule over strategic assets, etc. Throw in assassination attempts and pro-Terror rhetoric and you got a prime target for war-gaming/planning.

Puppy, Rumsfeld discovered that almost all the war plans were quite out of date, including Iraq. What was presented in first 30 days (by Wolfowitz I think, but not sure) was a political/economic plan where US would emerge as significant stakeholder in Iraq. There was NO accompanying war plan on how to achieve the ouster of SH.
The plan presented by Wolfowitz assumed little opposition from Iraqis to US taking over once ouster was achieved.

Copperdomebodhi said, 2 months ago
OldLegoDad - That linkwould be soooo relevant… if only someone in Congress was proposing a British-style single-payer system.
But hey, let’s play it your way. Doctors in Britain saw that a huge infusion of expensive health care wouldn’t help such premature babies live. They made a tough decision about tragic situations. Meanwhile, Insurance companies are letting people die, even though they’d survive with the care they’re entitled to under their insurance policies: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7czJ36okQTU
Where’s Republican outrage about that? Does all this right-wing morality boil down to “It’s okay if someone’s getting rich off of it”?

BCS, thanks, on my daughter’s first tour she was part of “Team Speicher”, trying to find out if Lt. Speicher was really alive in Iraq. After sifting through thousands of bits of information the team decided that the most likely scenario was that Lt. Speicher did not survive the plane crash and was buried in the desert by Bedouins (as is their custom) and that when the Bedouins trusted us they would lead us to his grave. Eventually this is what happened. But the Brass did not like this report so they buried it. Apparently the person who fed the Pentagon this info (maybe Chailabi) was lying and the only way we found out was going in and conducting this investigation. One more lie that led us to war in Iraq.
motivemagus said, 2 months ago
NFP, I suspect you’re being sarcastic, but actually, the plan to go into Iraq was not proposed first in the first thirty days of GW Bush’s presidency - it was proposed during GHW Bush’s presidency. Documented in…Bush’s own memoirs. Being an ex-CIA head and rather better educated in world affairs than his son, he said “no way.”
The idea was to establish a safe base for oil in the Mideast again, presumably through establishing a friendly partner (i.e., “puppet”) state. Saddam was considered vulnerable in a number of ways, not least of which was he wasn’t a pal like the Saudis. We showed no qualms about using him against Iran, you know, back when Rumsfield shook his hand. Yes, he was a bad man, but the sanctions were working against him. And contrary to the “Saddam = Al Queda” nonsense, he was a secular leader, one of the few in the Mideast. And he had nothing to do with 9/11, which was the supposed reason we went after him.

motive, I’m sure you’re correct and I should have written my post more clearly by saying that the first time Bush 43 administration discussed invading iraq was within 30 days of his presidency, long before 9/11. It was in fact a redo of the Bush 41 plan you describe well.

deadhead Bush 43 used information and assurances from Chalabi on many fronts during build-up to war and it all proved to be false.
Judith Miller at NYT used Chalabi for her sources for front page headlines that proved to be wrong too. Then Bush43 administration and Miller/NYT used each other for sources, based on Chalabi’s false info, all leading to reasons for going to war.

Any health care system no matter if its universal or single payer is bound to have horror stories. There is no avoiding that. In the case of this mother (my condolences) her baby was born five months early. The chances of survival being born that early even with medical care is slim to none. Check out this study in the U.K. that show the percentages and why their public health care laws are the way they are:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1939171/Survival-rate-for-premature-babies-fails-to-improve.html
Before anyone says anything I didn’t put this up to defend their health care laws. Also I would like to add that there are far more health insurance horror stories out there than there are public ones around the world.

Just think of all the millions Chalabi bilked out of our government for all this false “intelligence”. Sometimes people hear and believe only what they want to contrary to facts. This is why good investigative reporting is so important.

NC is confused. Bush Jr. tried to reform Social Security by “privatizing” it. That would have left us all in great shape today, wouldn’t it?
churchillwasright said, 2 months ago
FENNEC: That was voluntary, and you know it. No one was forced to take that option, and if you were retiring soon, it would have been stupid to do so. If you’re retiring 30 years from now, it’s still a better bet than assuming SS will be here.
