Funny how Mike forgets the sequester was all Obama’s idea.

The sequester was Obama’s idea the same way that paying ransom money to kidnappers is the victim’s idea. Paul Ryan took full credit for the idea at the time, you can look it up. But what REALLY matters is that both the Democrats and the president have proposals to avoid the sequester, and the GOP has gone on vacation without saying what they would do. Only, of course, my way or the highway on revenues. 700,000 jobs, gone. Thanks, GOP.

    @Mr. King

Dude, that is 50% of the democrats that voted for it in the house and 88% of the democrats voted for it in the senate and 100% of the democrats in the WH approved it.

So no, you argument holds no water.

Further, how can anyone say that the “debt ceiling” is not irrevocably linked to spending cuts? How will you ever reduce the deficit to zero and start to pay off debt thus limiting spending to the agreed upon limit with out spending cuts?

The much touted revenue increase on the “rich” garnered only 70-80 billion a year. The service on the debt, the “interest” we are obligated to pay each year on what we already owe is over 250 billion a year. So revenue enhancement is NOT going to do the job all by itself.

    THINK.

Obama’s budget proposal totals 3.6 TRILLION dollars. In his last plea to avoid the sequester Obama says AGAIN that cutting 85 billion of this 3.6 trillion will cut:

    Emergency responders
    Border agents
    Teachers
    availability of health care
    childcare

    Among other things.

Why is it that he threatens these specific targets to cut? Is there NO OTHER place he can cut 2% of his spending?

    His budget proposes to spend:

    56 billion in foreign aid
80+ billion in “discretionary spending” DHHS
40+ billion in HUD where we find funding for Freddie and Fannie and the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity among others.
53 billion for the National Intelligence department (CIA) all of it “discretionary” spending.

    For a few examples.

A TOTAL of 1.5 TRILLION dollars in “discretionary” spending. That means it isn’t mandatory to spend ANY of it.

And he’s going to cut essential jobs? What a p..s poor manager he must be.

Very thoughtful post Bruce. Not to be critical, but the way you solidify your point (when available) is to post your links or sources. I’m one of those “numbers” people that like to read source material, it’s kind of an analysts obsession…

How about this for a plan

1 – what you got last year is what you get this year. Across the board. Nobody gets more.

2 – Next year you get 10% less than this year. Each year you will get an additional reduction in spending by 10% of the previous year.

3 – Continue with step 3 until spending is reduced to 98% of the revenue collected the previous year.

4 – Once spending reaches 98% of revenue, then spending can increase as revenue increases from the previous year.

5 – The 2% excess in revenue above expenses will be applied to reducing the debt.

6 – Tax reform on the following plan.

a – All income derived from whatever source is taxable. Income, rent, alimony, cliping coupons, interest, health care, matching 401(k) contributions, any source.

b – The first 20,000 dollars will be free from federal tax.

c – All income over 20,000 will be taxed at the rate of 1/3rd or 33.33%.

d – This will apply to all taxpayers and organizations, including corporations, unions, churches, aclu, acorn, everybody. No exceptions. First 20k free of tax. One third of everything above that.

Because of baseline budgeting and the corruption of our language slowdowns in spending rates are now called cuts. They aren’t but too many simpletons believe it to be true.
