    Gun laws don’t stop maniacs from committing crimes and violence. Criminals don’t obey laws…even gun laws.

    Only someone else with a gun could have changed this outcome. My church has an on duty police officer in the building during Sunday services. Why wasn’t there one at this theatre where hundreds of young adults were assembling?
    Not criticizing, just wondering.

    We can’t be far from the day a group of strangers start shooting at each other each thinking they are getting the villain and saving the day. A deadly mistake.

    @ Dry (if you stop in here)

    Checked that 1.5 hour thing. Most sources say 1.5 hours with a couple saying “over an hour”. They had to drive from Oslo and then their boat broke down.

    “Typical—libs cry gun control every time a lunatic goes on rampage. Unless, of course, it is a terrorist like the one in the Ft Hood massacre—then it is ‘not so fast!’”

    That would be because most lunatics who go on a shooting rampage bought their gun legally. We don’t care if responsible citizens buy a hand gun or shot gun. We want to stop nutters from buying guns and killing.

    In a dark, smoke filled room full of paniced people? Someone else with a gun would have made things SO MUCH WORSE.

    In the aftermath of fort hood, CONservatives were calling on a purge of all muslims from the military. Does that mean the right wants christians banned from movie theaters? Because the terrorist who shot up the movie theater was a christian. Christian terrorist…

    Anyone who says that this guy could have been stopped if there had been someone in the audience with a gun — well, you’ve watched too many movies. Try to get your mind out of fantasy world and try to think about what the situation was like in reality.

    ridiculous statement. Only someone with NO training in firearms would say something like that. Concealed carry required both training and intelligence. I single individual with a handgun at that theatre may not have ended the threat—after all the assailant had more firepower and a superior position—but an armed trained individual in the theatre could have ended everything with one well placed shot.

    If your church needs an armed police officer during church services, maybe you are in teh wrong church.
    .
    And just wondering, WHO is paying for that on-duty police officer? If not your church, why? You preach personal responsibility so if your church isn’t renting the cop for it’s services why am I paying for your police protection?
    .
    I know you won’t answer, but if you do, I can’t wait to see the obfuscation, redirection, and how you ignore the point because you can’t defend yours.

    @Archimedes

    To serve your self-interest you ignored the facts, not surprising. According to news reports the gunman first threw a smoke grenade so there was no way to see, through the smoke, especially since the theatre was dark. You know, they dim the lights while showing a movie. The gunman did not have a specific target so he didn’t need to see so the smoke didn’t bother him. It was simply a random shooting spree. You are correct that “…an armed trained individual in the theatre could have ended everything with one well placed shot.” But you conveniently refused to acknowledge the truth in what Heavy B and lonecat wrote, so I will amalgamate them for you, "In a dark, smoke filled room full of paniced people? Someone else with a gun would have made things SO MUCH WORSE. Try to get your mind out of fantasy world and try to think about what the situation was like in reality.” The reality is no amount of training would enable rambo-joe to fire, “…one well placed shot,” in that theatre. So lonecat’s comment is very well applied here, “Try to get your mind out of fantasy world and try to think about what the situation was like in reality.” As for your comment, “Concealed carry required both training and intelligence,” I call foul. According to the nut-jobs at the
    N(o)
    R(esponsibilities)
    A(ccepted)
    Training is an impediment to gun ownership. Intelligence has been proven time and again to not be a prerequisite to own or carry a weapon, concealed or otherwise. When you want to argue the way things are, not the way you want them to be, then we can have a rational, coherent discussion. Until them you will simply be embraced by your ilk and regarded as a nut by the rational, intelligent society at large.

    @Archimedes

    Please hear the tone of respect and compassion I write this in, as you read: The individual you describe would have to have very extensive training, not just that required to get a gun permit. Many police offiicers, FBI or ATF agents, serving or past military, might be able to pull it off.
    The individual you describe would have to first realize what was happening, draw their weapon, chamber a round or otherwise ready the piece, get a clear field of fire, assess what was behind the shooter, probably move towards the shooter unless they were in the first five or six rows (through panicked, running citizens, or climbing over the bodies of injured or those taking cover), and then, overcoming healthy fear, adrenaline surge, with bullets flying and lights flashing, take aim. I’d love to see someone have dropped him at the beginning of the attack. Hell, I would love to have been the person to do it. But there are darn few 007’s out there. One has to be realistic.

    @Archimedes

    To give you your due, Archimedes, and again with respect: I understand that after the attacks on Israeli schools in the last century, school personnel with the necessary military training were issued with weapons, which are kept secure but handy in case of future attacks. I emphasize that the personnel are trained veterans of the military, members of the reserve.
