The redemption of Florida? They just wrote my family out of their constitution. Not much redemption there.

    Florida banned same-sex marriage.

Marla Stevens is probably referring to the constitutional ban on gay marriage that passed:

Supporters of the Marriage Protection Act, as the amendment was called, said it is narrowly focused on defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. It also invalidates any “legal union that is treated as marriage or the substantial equivalent thereof.” But that clause was meant to prevent Florida from adopting civil unions, as Vermont has, said Mathew Staver, dean of the Liberty University School of Law.

The amendment would have no effect on domestic partnership because they are not the “substantial equivalent” of marriage, he said.

BfromBoston, thanks for the info but MS bitterly labeling everyone in the same package doesn’t gain a lot of support. Steadly and competently present your case and it will come.

I love how “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” can be written OUT of The Constitution, for some. The definition of marriage may hold up in SCOTUS but the 2nd part about NO equivalent will not stand.

Yep - and California which pushed Obama over the top pushed my family out of it’s constitution.

I feel so proud of having supported the rights of all to be treated equally over the years regardless of the race, gender, religion, etc.

African American voters in California supported writing discrimination into the Constitution 7 to 3.

That make me feel really a part of the dream. Quietly whispered from the back of the new bus. I do HOPE that President Obama really does help affect CHANGE for ALL Americans.

curiosity, why sit in the back of the bus? I seem to remember there was this “colored” lady in Birmingham, AL that said she’d had about enough a while back and started something.

Humph - I wasn’t sitting in the back of the bus. I’m out. I’m comfortable with my relationship and be open about it with others. I got married to the man I’ve loved for 14 years. A slim majority of voting Californians just pushed me to the back of the bus.

Still a bit sore, but looking hopefully to redress from the courts. That is, after all, why they are there. To correct the legal and constitutional missteps of our municipalities, states, and federation.

Thanks for the vote of encouragement :-)

As a side note…has anyone seen polling results of how the LGBT community voted? Probably not, because nobody bothers to ASK in exit polls about a person’s sexuality. Think on what that means for a person’s position in society.

Meanwhile Hooray for Pres. Elect Obama! :-)

curiosity, if you’ve been with your partner of over fourteen years your record beats a very large number of “straights”. Though I don’t share your preference I believe we have to respect others or we don’t respect our selves. Good luck and God bless.

I heard on the radio this morning that, according to exit polls in California, 70 of the Latinos and African-Americans voted for Proposition 8. Interesting statistic.

Marla - Truly sorry about what my state did to your (and many other) family. Frankly I’m amazed Obama carried the state, but hopefully it’s a sign of things to come…
