If you want fewer illegals, prosecute the businesses that hire them.

I think English is the default language used worldwide at international airports.

But the liberals and democrats consider it racist to not hire someone because they cannot do the job.

Let’s put the blame where it actually all started. George Washington was the first President so we should blame him for not giving the country food stamps, social security, welfare, free healthcare and all the other gimmepig entitlements the other countries experience.

    @

I can’t tell whether he’s being sarcastic or thinks someone who speaks an eastern China dialect of Cantonese is being discriminated against for not being hired as a controller at an international airport.

You mean the unionized air traffic controllers that were going to shut down the country? We all thank Reagan for having the balls to tell the controllers to stay on the job or they can be replaced. The unions felt they were above the law and gambled Reagan would back down. We all know who WON!
    Thank you Reagan.

‘But the liberals and democrats consider it racist to not hire someone because they cannot do the job.’
    -
According to EEO, being unable to fulfill job requirements was the EXACT reason not to hire someone.
    -
For example, having insufficient verbal and writing skills often means you cannot do the job and shouldn’t be hired. If you are qualified, you must be considered for hiring regardless of other considerations.
    -
And, if you are a hiring authority and you focus on how well the applicant can do the job, you will get better employees.

Air traffic controllers are held to a higher standard than most postions. There are age limits and apptitude tests. Controllers tend to burn out early due to stress.

ATC is a highly formalized affair. Besides the banter (very little of that) all instructions are standardized. You say “Turn right to 295”. You DON’T say “Your new heading is 295”. It would mean the same, but the first version is the way it’s done, everywhere, always. So, in theory, anybody being able to learn the phrases, all numbers and the ICAO-alphabet (“Papa Tango Charly, decent and maintain flight-level 30”) and understand what he’s doing (!) could be hired.

But all of this flies out of the window once you hear “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday!”, and THAT’S the problem with real good English in aviation, not just on the ATC-side but also in regard of the pilots. There are no standard phrases for “My right engine is dead, I’m losing fuel and the co-pilot has a head-wound”. You need to be able so formulate such a sentence, even if you were born in a straw-hut in Nigeria, otherwise you don’t belong up there…

    Disclaimer: I’m only a sim-pilot, but a good one :-)

Yes, English is international language for control towers. For clarity, 10-codes were also developed for clarity, AND brevity on radios, especially valuable in emergencies. The switch to cell phone use, and jabber, jabber, jabber, endlessly, is why they’re so dangerous with drivers!!

As to hiring “incompetents”, yes, it’s a problem I had with “affirmative action” as opposed to “equal employment opportunity”. Of course, the “Peter principle” applies in almost all large organizations, and incompetents rising to high power they aren’t qualified for his epitomized by “W”, and Mitt Robme. (OKay in the ’toon application, the prize goes to Clarence Thomas.)
