Actually, it is not a dream. In November of 2010 the entire House of Representatives will have to stand for re-election; all 435 of them. One third of the Senate, a total of 33 of them, will also stand for re-election. Vote every incumbent out. And I mean every one of them. No matter their Party affiliation.
Let’s start all over in the House of Representatives with 435 people who have absolutely no experience in running that body,
with no political favors owed to anyone but their own constituents. Let’s make them understand that they work for us. They are answerable to us and they simply have to run that body with some common sense.

Two years later, in 2012, vote the next third of the incumbents in the Senate out.
You’ll know who they are because their names will be on the ballot and, in most cases, will be shown as the Incumbent. If you don’t know who your Senators are, ( there are only two for each State ) find out.
And then vote them out, too!

We can do the same thing in 2014 and, by that time we will have put all new people in that body as well.

We, the People, have got to take this Country back and we can to do it peacefully.

I could actually support that, rikoshay. But do you really think that the people replacing the incumbents would be any better? Such optimism you have!

I’ve got a better idea. My grandfather (may he rest in peace) always told me that he believed that the death penalty should be banned for everyone except politicians. The moment any politician is found guilty of corruption or something similar, you hang ‘em. Just like that. That’s the sort of thing to keep ‘em honest.

I’m afraid I’ll be the wet blanket here. Every year someone yells “Fire Congress,” but it’s meaningless. They are a collection of people, none of whom can be forced to agree with everyone else. If Congress were one person (well, if a corporation can be a person, I suppose Congress can be, too), then yes, we could find someone better. As it is, you would only replace it with a bunch of other bickering, self-serving people who would tend to seek to retain their positions. You either have to find a different system altogether or deal with it.

Yeah, I knew a day would come where Ramirez and I wholeheartedly agree. I would follow it up with imprison the wall street executives that decided they “deserved” 140B in bonuses for the last year.

I agree with rikoshay for once. Firing a LARGE amount of incumbents would–despite what the cynics claim–change both the tone and makeup of Congress in a substantial way.

However, my realism towards both the Left and Right shows me how futile this hope is. You can find plenty of Rightish people who can–and would–vote their own incumbents out.

But the Left doesn’t work that way. The makeup of both the Congress and Senate proves it. All the longest-serving Senators and Congressmen are Demoncrats–far left Demoncrats, at that.

The Left just never sees any problems with their guys (and girls; let’s not forget nearly 100% of all female legislators are far-left fruitcakes).

Chuck Schumer will die in office.

Robert Byrd will die in office.

Barney Frank will die in office.

Charlie Wrangel will die in office.

    And the beat goes on…

I have moved AWAY from Hell holes run by Demoncrat politicians in my life. The voter fraud in those areas is enough to make sure neither I nor anyone else to the right of Karl Marx could ever win.

The last thing I intend to do is ever voluntarily move BACK to such a degraded region…

rikoshayrabbit, you are still dreaming. You can yell and scream about electing people YOU want as much as you wish. But the fact remains, NO ONE gets elected without outspending his opponents. And where are you and the rest of the lower classes going to get that kind of money? We the Businessmen decide who runs and who wins with our funding.
And should ever you start suggesting reforming this process, we’ll just get our toadies to scream about you restricting free speech. Works every time.

Problem. So we by some miracle defeat all incumbents
in the House. All of those permanent “staffers” are going to be reemployed by inexperienced neophytes and will continue to run things the way they always have as enablers of the lobbiest .

Neoconman, I tremble, on my knees, with my head bowed, before your greatness and terrible power. But seriously neoconman, never… NEVER…. underestimate a crowd of insanely angry people with guns and machetes that would enjoy dicing you to pieces. Actually, you are the most entertaining psycho we’ve had the pleasure of reading here lately. From what I know about the Illuminati, the guys who own this planet, I truly doubt they spend a lot of time on gocomics.com writing foreboding messages to a bunch of toon heads.

  18. scottfreitas

scottfreitasGenius_badge said, about 1 month ago

We can’t adapt a cynical attitude and just give up. Throw out as many incumbents in 2010 as it takes, and keep doing so EVERY election until you finally get a crop in office who understands that if they want to keep their jobs, they have to at best PRETEND to listen to lobbyists, while actually listening to their constituents.

Someday, under such a scenario, pols would figure out lobbyists are stupid, and will keep giving them money so long as they just pay lip-service to them. You know, a complete turnaround of what we have right now…

Nice dream, Rabbit. Might happen in the Twilight Zone – maybe.

You forget that the majority of people don’t vote to begin with, and those who do are brain dead drones who vote the party line. Think about the actual issues?

    When hell freezes over!

I would put a caveat in there for your amusement –

NO LAWYER ever again allowed to hold office in Washing ton DC.

    No lobbyists!!!

One term manned by the common folk – mechanics, teachers, bus drivers, factory workers, etc.

THAT would be a real change!!

All we have in Washington are power hunger BASTARDS who count on the imbecility of the people in order to stay in power.

The funny thing is, that though most of you wont to throw the politicians out, the motivations for such a sentiment are polar opposites.

The left complains that they are not doing enough to take care of us, while the right just wants them to get out of the way.

I think that we ought to make the Federal Government to live within the LIMITATIONS IMPOSED BY THE CONSTITUTION! A part time legislature would be a good start.

Can’t help but relate that Hitler fired “Congress”, then along comes “W” stating things would be easier if we were a dictatorship, like the one he and Cheney envisioned called “the Unitary Presidency” that totally violated the Constitution all the right-wingers like Scooter and Ramirez detest.

“Firing” Congress isn’t the answer, electing qualified representatives by an informed and qualified electorate IS!

It is time to stop Illiterate “neocon” morons from electing their peers.

Being a wet blanket, I just have the feeling that the “throw the bums out” meme is immature. Think about it. The system is the system, people are people, that all doesn’t change easily.

  27. believecommonsense

believecommonsenseGenius_badge said, about 1 month ago

Fennec, I know you’re correct and I believe that if special interest money isn’t somehow removed from the governance of our nation, throwing the current bums out will get us right back to where we are when the new people learn they have to play the same special interest game in order to be re-elected. it’s just tempting sometimes.

  28. petergrt

petergrt said, about 1 month ago

I am glad you brought up the matter of ‘special interests’.

Though 0bama proclaimed a new era of ‘transparency’ and employed lofty sounding anti special interest rhetoric thought his campaign and soon after being elected, the installation of 30+ czars and such has stimulated the Washington influence peddling industry such, that it is the only booming city in the union. Just try to lease an office or an apartment there.

In fact , 0bama should be given credit for creating thousands of new lobbyist jobs, in addition to those 30+K jobs his 787 B ‘stimulus’ boondoggle is said to have created.

Lobbyists never had it this great!!!

  29. cdward

cdward said, about 1 month ago

May I just add that I doubt changing the rules will significantly change the results? Yes, we can make it better, but I’ve yet to see a governance system where there isn’t at least a little corruption, and a lot of big egos. May be the nature of the beast.
