“… look at the ratio of debt to G.D.P., which measures the government’s fiscal position better than a simple dollar number. …. since World War II, you find that of the 10 presidents who preceded Barack Obama, seven left office with a debt ratio lower than when they came in. Who were the three exceptions? Ronald Reagan and the two George Bushes. So debt increases that didn’t arise either from war or from extraordinary financial crisis are entirely associated with hard-line conservative governments.”

I agree. Being in an SUV is much safer than being in a small car.

And being properly trained to drive a Semi, along with the strict testing required to get a C.D.L. has saved MANY lives!

    I’ll try to articulate this:
    Smoking
    - smoking kills more people every year than guns. It has no redeeming benefit
    - It’s not right codified within our constitution nor restriction within our constitution unless you possibly delve into the details of the commerce clauses.
    - even though it kills more people than guns we as a society still see the folly in trying to outright ban smoking.
    Booze
    - drunk driving and alcoholism cause more deaths than gun violence each year
    - it has medicinal benefits when taken in moderation.
    - it’s a foodstuff which requires regulation, but it’s a prime example of mistakes made when trying to legislate an extremely restrictive moral position.

    Cars
    - in combination with booze, “dope”, or on their own cause more accidental deaths than gun violence each year
    - this is a device that majority of people use every day. failure to regulate and codify the rules behind it would cause more damage than gun violence ever could. A 1.5 ton projectile vs. 30 or so small ones?
    - I was always told driving was a privilege not a right.

    Dope
    - depending on what it meant by “dope”. In the picture it appears to be marijuana.
    - marijuana still has the detriments of smoking, but the jury is out on any medicinal benefits
    - we still make the same mistake as booze with this one and it probably shouldn’t be as regulated considering regulation still doesn’t make a dent in use and possession.
Guns (apparently semi-auto according to the cartoon)
    - a codified right within our constitution. Important enough to be included as a means to maintain our system of governance
    - kills lives, but also defends them
    - an understood hidden benefit is the ability to provide food when hunting is available
    - there is already a considerable amount of regulation on guns. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_law_in_the_United_States

How about the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? ALL of which precede the second amendment in our founding documents. But the NRA never wants to admit the truth, that THEIR right to happiness ends at the tip of MY (or Ima’s, etc.) nose.

BTW: Wuerker did NOT say UNregulated, he said not HEAVILY regulated. And the NRA said this week that we should enforce laws already on the books to keep crazies and criminals from getting guns. Hmmm! Sounds like BACKGROUND CHECKS to me!

I don’t think Wuerker understands that BATFE stands for Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, with that ONE agency being responsible for federal agency action on all those items. I find it ironic that 3 of his 5 examples should ALL be regulated under the same general body of law, and yet like most anti-gun liberals he’s utterly clueless about it.
